The tweet from diabetes.co.uk announcing the updated low carb program attracted an incredulous response from someone who is actually a vocal advocate of low carb for T2. He suggested the figure of 1.8m kg lost was an April Fool. I responded that it worked out at 9kg lost per participant, in line with @southportgp's clinical experience.

I was then told that unsubstantiated statements did no favour to the cause of low carb.

So. I assume the 200K participants is just the number of people who have signed up, as there's a counter on the page, which I'm assuming is automatic. But where does the weight loss figure come from?

I mean - I signed up to the program, but didn't follow it through because I had actually cut my carbs below 50g before I found it, so there didn't seem a lot of point. When I tried to fill in the survey, I couldn't get past the page about medication. I can't remember if I had reached a question about weight loss or not... would my weight loss be included in the statistics even though I didn't complete the questionnaire?

Would like to know, so I can pass the information on to this rather angry person

Barbara - I understand periodically during and after the programme, feedback can be recorded on the participant's progress report, where they have the opportunity to record weight, medications taken and so on. I think there is also an opportunity to record mood/emotional state.

Whilst the 1.8m kg relates to 200,000 members, if not all provided feedback (like me - I signed up out of curiosity, but went no further), the weight loss per participant could be even greater.

When I saw the tweet myself, if did a quick calculation, because I'm a visualiser. In other words, a picture says 100 words. What the calculations informed me was that the cumulative weight loss recorded by the LC Programme is the equivalent of 3 times the population of the village I live in, basing it on my own weight. OK, I'm a short, slight person, but even if it had been 2 times the population of my village, it's still pretty mind-blowing.

Yes I worked out those figures at 9 kg per person. I would say that's a correct average. We see many on this forum with even greater losses than that . I am pretty sure the admin team would have checked, checked and re-checked their figures as they wouldn't want to undermine the whole program with incorrect stats. Also some folk would have stayed at around the 130g-150g carbs per day and others would have dropped lower if they needed to do so, as recommended later on in the original program.

Actually improved and sustained normal glucose/insulin markers may be better metrics of a successful low carb program.

And I would prefer a focus on waistloss over weightloss...

Mmm.... well I've lost 4 stone, which is about 25kg, since I went keto last July. Haven't lost any more for about the past 3 months ( and I could lose the same again and still be somewhat overweight), but given my history, staying steady would be a triumph.

And HbA1C.... 62 after 7 weeks of keto, 40 3 months later, and the estimate from my Freestyle Libre is low 30's. No-ones talking me back into regular carbage.
