Hi, I am a little confused and upset at the moment after a telephone conversation with my doctor. He kept telling me that my figure was 98 after a recent bloodtest and that he was very concerned, and i have a review appointment in September. I kept asking him what figures? I am used to being told figures of 6 or 7 for my blood glucose level .

I have lost around 4 stone since first being told about having Type 2 and have worked hard to maintain or still try and lose more. Why are my figures not improving or am I wrong being under the impression that losing weight will help I was over 15 stone at 5ft 3 but am now around 11 stone. I take it the % is not enough, but I suppose there are no hard and fast rules.

He wants me to take more metformin so my dose will increase x 4 over the next 2 months, so am currently taking 500 a day but will increase to 2000.

Should i just be happy that I need to increase my tablets, or can i work harder to get off the tablets.
My doctor is very hard to understand, and I cannot get an appointment until September for my diabetes......so sorry for the questions, I'm just upset as I thought I was going in the right direction

Hi,

The "98" sounds like your HbA1c. Which is an average over a 3 month period.

Are the 6 & 7s from a glucose meter??

Nice and useful, that GP of yours...

Let's see. The 98 is your HbA1c, which is one way to measure your blood glucose averages of three months. It's measured in mmol/mol though, and maybe you're used to getting your HbA1c in a different measurement? Percentages maybe? Or, like @Jaylee suggested, are those the numbers you see on your meter at home? Because those only tell you what your blood is going at that very moment and is measured in mmol/l, no averages.

All that aside, let's look at your diet. You sound like you're focusing on losing weight, and while that is excellent, have you also brought your blood glucose down by going low carb? How did you lose the weight? Exercise or diet? Because if your HbA1c came back 98, your blood glucose is rather high and you need to bring it down, and he can up metformin until the cows come home, but that drug alone won't make much more than a dent.

So... What does a day look like, meal wise? Be as exact as you can. Because yes, 98 is rather high, and there is loads you can do about it yourself if there is room within your diet to cut carbs. (You could even end up not needing metformin anymore either). https://josekalsbeek.blogspot.com/2019/11/the-nutritional-thingy.html should help clear some stuff up, and in the meantime, if you're willing to let us know what you're eating, we might be able to help you bring those numbers down. Also, if you already are doing a very low carb diet and you're still seeing a HbA1c like that, you really need to know.

You're going to be okay, we've got you.

Hugs,
Jo
