Quick Question

Hi everyone,
Thank you for everyones advice with my last post. As mentioned in my previous post, I am boarder line diabetic (the doctors disagree if I am diabetic or prediabetic). Two of the three doctors suggested I lose weight and see what happens to my blood sugar before I take medicine. The third one recommended I take metformin. I decided to try the drug free approach and see how my blood sugar level improves with weight loss. A month in, I am about 13 kg lighter with a low carb diet. In a few days I man flying to Ireland to meet my family. They have a spare blood tester there so I am going to start monitoring my blood sugar more. I plan to do another proper blood test in a month or so to see if things are improving.

Anyways, off to my question. Over the last few days, my vision has been acting up. It can be hard to read and my vision gets bury but only when looking at certain things. I saw one of the three doctors and he suggested it might just be because of high blood sugar but it not serious yet. Has anyone else had any experiences with vision issues? Thanks again for your help.

My vision did go a bit blurry before my diagnosis but then my HbAc1 was 112 when they tested but presumably yours is low 40's. Unless you have been hammering the carbs, and your excellent weight loss (and post) suggest you obviously are not, I would doubt that diabetes is your problem but your rapid weight loss might be, >3kg a week is very fast. Clearly monitoring your BG levels is a good strategy in the long term but I wouldn't worry too much about your vision as far as a diabetes complication is concerned. Perhaps you might visit the optician to see if you need reading glasses but I suspect that your vision will go back to normal once you normalise your calorie intake post weight loss.

Thanks for the post. Funny part is I got my eyes tested for new glasses a week before this started. My prescription has been the same since I was in highschool. I guess its something I will have to keep an "eye" on

Hi @smurphy55 ,

Whith out knowing for sure. It doesn't look like you use a meter.. (Yet!) ;)

It could be down to changes in blood glucose levels? For instance, if you've had been running at higher BGs for some time & they are now possibly back in the zone? Which can happen as levels change. The eyes can just take a little time catching up with changes to the rest of the body...

"Windows to the soul.." Nah, but they can reflect modulation in BGs.. :banghead:

As per @Jaylee, it’s not unusual to experience a change in visual acuity when glucose control rapidly changes. It’s unlikely to be anything more sinister than that unless you’ve unknowingly had high glucose levels for many years, which is of course possible. At the very least I would visit an optician who will normally be able to detect clinical problems just using regular retinal photography. I doubt you have much cause for concern, but it may be worthwhile getting checked out just for peace of mind. I wouldn’t be worrried about buying a prescription though until things have settled.

And well done with the weight loss!
