Hi as per my last post I'm feeling very ill at the moment (sore throat, ear ache, sweating profusely but shivering and headache) ketone levels have been around 2 for last couple of days but is now 4.9! My bs is 8 (which is higher than normal due to illness) but am very concerned about ketone levels. I've just eaten 25g carbs to be on the safe side but really could do with some advice. Thanks

I have a virus at the moment and always try to up my carbs to give my body an energy boost to fight the virus.
Good luck.

Hi VinnyJames thanks for the reply. Is 4.9 too high though even dangerous? Ta

Well not really eaten much today due to feeling rotten but what I have eaten has contained a lot of good fat and that reading was about 2hrs after my last meal. I've never had a reading that high before so am just a bit concerned

@vxrich If your ketone blood test is 4.9, I really think you need to do something. At the very least phone the NHS 111 number and get some urgent advice - please, do it now. Sue xxx

@mrspuddleduck thanks for your concern. I've had a look on Google and many people stay at that level for weeks so, so long as my bs isn't high I should be ok and I reckon the carbs that I've eaten will drop it down, I'll check in a bit. Again, I really appreciate your advice and it's good to know that you guys are available to give advice

Ok just checked again and ketone levels are 3.6 now so panic over! Looks like carbs did the trick! Typical really as I've posted quite a lot with regards to getting levels up and when they are up I worry about them! Thanks again

@vxrich , I know what your saying about the bs levels but I'm still abit concerned with your symptoms and the ketone levels. May be being a mother hen but better safe than sorry! And its only a phone call...... Sue xxx

@Enclave I've probably eaten a third of my normal intake today but ketone levels are coming down steadily now. I think those levels given by diabetes UK are when bs are high (I think my diabetic nurse used to say mid teens) but isn't it different when you are in a state of ketosis? I'm certainly not arguing and appreciate your help!

yes your BS needs to also be high :)

I suspect you were experiencing starvation ketone levels given a lack of food. Not a huge risk along side the blood glucose levels you were seeing, but needs to be kept an eye on. Glad you're in a more comfortable place now.

Cheers tim2000s, Yeh looking at the ketosis chart it is a level of starvation so I suppose it makes sense now. Will make sure I eat my normal intake tomorrow and see what happens. No doubt get low readings again and wish they were higher again :D

Quick update.... My ketone are down to their normal levels now, bs a bit higher than I like but putting that down to illness. Good nights kip and a good breakfast and feel much better. Might even get a much needed gentle run in later ;)

It's worth remembering that much of the general information and advice regarding ketosis and ketone levels on the web will be aimed at non-diabetics (or possibly low carbing type 2s) who don't ever have to worry about ketoacidosis. As a type 1 you definitely need to take this in context and should take extra care. IMO!

This is very true and I've found out some interesting facts regarding both ketosis and ketoacidos last night and today. :)

Much better thanks. Actually been for a gentle run. Trouble is now the wife's getting same symptoms (bar the high ketone levels) so looks like she's getting it and pretty sure that I've had a nasty virus and high ketones were due to lack of food yesterday.

One of the things to be aware of is that DKA occurs due to a lack of insulin. As long as you have enough insulin, as evidenced by your blood glucose readings, you shouldn't go in to DKA. That's not to say you can't, as it is possible, but it's very unlikely.
