One of the great British drummers, Eric Delaney, has died. He had a long career, coming to fame with his big band version of Oranges and Lemons in which he played the theme on timpani, then hurtled across to his drum kit as the band broke into the swinging version. He also pioneered the use of brushes on the timpani.
He was a great showman, placing the drums high on a pedestal which revolved as he played, using two bass drums a setup which was revolutionary at the time and the only other drummer using this technique was Louie Bellson, drummer with Duke Ellington's orchestra.
Eric gave a lot of entertainment over the years and was playing with a small group until recently. He will be much missed in the music world.
