Raised blood pressure!

I'm so confused, been on LCHF for 7 months and lost lots of weight, my BG is always within 'normal' ranges now. But my blood pressure which had been stable (on meds) for 10 years has shot up - the nurse actually called an ambulance for me and I was warned it might be a stroke. ECG and MRI were normal but my BP hasn't come down and I have really bad vertigo.
I'm scared something bad is going on, anyone experienced something similar?
 
does the kidneys not play a part in BP regulation.......are any other tests being carried out...?

what was the level?
 
No experience @Alzebra, just replying to wish you luck and hope the medics find out what is causing your high bp.

I think it reached 196/140 and it was markedly worse on one side than the other. Blood tests were fine and all kidney tests were good in July at my annual check. I see the GP again in a week but nothing else has been said. :-(
 
Hi Alzebra,
This can happen if one is sensitive to salt.
Have you increased your salt intake?

I had uneven BP investigated you will need a ct scan.
Mine cleared up when I got a pacemaker.

Have you been stressed of late?

I think my salt intake is a lot lower on LCHF but I have been stressed. Workplace bullying and loss of a close friend :-(
 
Sorry to hear of your situation, life is difficult enough without people putting the metaphorical boot in when one is down.

Give it time, it should come down, I find some time out walking in the countryside helps bring mine down.
These kind of problems trigger the wrong hormones for htn.

Alzebar - you say you have been on meds for your BP. If you have been on them for a long time it is possible that they are not working as well as they should. Just a thought, I am no expert. If this was the case your Doctor could well suggest changing them - lots of different ones to choose from. Good luck, hope you start to feel better soon.
 
Stress can do crazy things to the blood pressure. Maybe try some deep breathing excersices, meditation.

Thanks @Robinredbreast I know that high blood pressure runs in my family and my stress levels are high. What is confusing me though is that over the past 7 month I've lost a lot of weight (over 6 stone), am walking 10-15 miles a week and I've got my BG down to non-diabetic levels. I don't understand why my BP has gone up now, after making all these lifestyle changes?

I'm trying to take a positive view of it and reminding myself that if I'd had this news 2 years ago, when my BMI was 20 points higher and my HbA1c was 83, I'd be in a much worse position.

Can losing weight lower high blood pressure?

You can lower your blood pressure by losing a little weight. But it is not clear whether weight loss alone can protect against long-term harm caused by high blood pressure.

High blood pressure (hypertension) means that the blood vessels are under too much pressure. High blood pressure itself does not usually cause noticeable symptoms. But over the long term constant high blood pressure can damage the arteries and organs such as the heart and kidneys. This means that hypertension is an important risk factor for other health problems like heart attack or stroke.

Many people who have hypertension are overweight. They are often advised to lose weight in order to lower their blood pressure. Researchers from the Cochrane Collaborationtested whether there is any scientific evidence to support this advice. They looked for suitable studies that assessed the effects that diets or weight loss medication had on blood pressure.

Well done on all your changes, you have done so well, but I can understand your frustration at having higher blood pressure. I don't know if the above link will help, or it could be some underlying condition that needs to be investigated and your GP should look into this, with tests and a possible referral?

Fasting can increase BP. Stress of course. Has your heart rate increased? Beta blockers are great for stress induced BP by slowing the heart and as a consequence BP will drop.
 
Hi alzebra,
I think your BP is in the range that the GP should get you to have your adrenal hormones checked. They need to eliminate excessive aldosterone etc.

Morning all. I'm now having occasional episodes where my BP suddenly drops down to a healthy 110/75 in a matter of minutes. Of course, this change actually makes me feel extremely faint and clammy - a bit like the false hypos some people experience as they lower their BG to healthy levels having been used to running high for a long time.
My GP has mentioned it might be a side-effect of my anti-depressant SNRI tablets which would at least explain why it's happening now after I've lost weight (same dose in smaller body = more noticeable side-effects). Next time I see her I'm going to ask for a reduced dose and see if that helps. My sister is a pharmacist and thinks this might be worth trying...
 
I'm updating this in case anyone else has similar issues in future. I've been told to come off my anti-depressant SNRI and the Tegretol that I take for nerve damage (non-diabetic related). I'm tapering these down slowly and have also doubled the dosages of my blood pressure meds.
Christmas will be painful without the Tegretol and I'm really hoping that stopping the anti-depressant doesn't cause a relapse of those symptoms. Work have been totally **** about everything, they seem to think I'm doing this on purpose just to be a nuisance. Stupid people
 
Hadn't seen this thread before, but very glad things are improving.

My bp is VERY linked to stress - looks like yours may be too, but of course i am just speculating.

It is worth remembering (i have to remind myself of this regularly) that raised bp is a symptom, not a cause. All that dp lowering drugs do is address the symptom. Far better to address the cause, and the bp then drops naturally.

Of course, this is 100x easier said than done!
