I was put on a low dose of Ramipril a few years ago for protein in my kidneys, but not blood pressure. Stopped taking them a while back and my kidneys are fine and I had no problems with Ramipril.
I had to have 3 different types of eye drops to take after an eye operation, all of them said 'don't take if you are diabetic...........

Fair enough, just wanted to make sure :) - Thank you for the reply

Hi @lgray123 - Ramipril is a standard treatment for high blood pressure for T1Ds (I've been on it for years thanks to familial hypertension).

The line I think you are looking at is:

  • you have diabetes or impaired kidney function and you are treated with a blood pressure lowering medicine containing aliskiren.
Which is saying that if you have diabetes and are taking a medication containing aliskirin, you shouldn't take ramipril, which is different.

Hi and welcome to the forum @lgray123 :)

I've taken a 5mg dose of Ramipril for the last 12 years or more, other people on the forum take the drug too and it's often prescribed to those who have Nephropathy (kidney disease), so far I've had no side-effects whatsoever and my diabetes team are aware that I take the drug.

Ramipril is actually proactively prescribed to diabetics at risk of kidney disease.

It has also been proven to offer protection against the onset of T2 in those at risk.

If you can tolerate it, it's worth sticking with it, one of the safest and oldest ace inhibitors.

I've taken it for 20 yrs without issue and was advised to keep taking by my cardiovascular consultant. His exact words "don't ever let a gp take you off ramipril, the benefits are huge"

I no longer need it as my BP is in range without, but I also have perfect kindney function numbers so just stick with it.

My kidney function was checked before being put onto it, and is about to be checked again now I've been increased to 2.5 a couple of weeks ago. My GP is well aware of my diabetes as we were discussing it at the same appointment she increased the Ramipril.

I feel like one out of hundreds ? thousands ? I simply couldn't tolerate it.
I was put on Ramipril for kidney protection, but lasted less than two weeks. It was clear for others to see that I was turned into a zombie. Whilst on it , while going to bed, I fell down several stairs, and badly banged my head. That was it for me. Stopped, and symptoms disappeared. Informed GP who wasn't too bothered. It had been merely precautionary.

That's the great thing about this forum - we discover we're not all the same !

I know I'm not alone :

"Ramipril ... was great at reducing blood pressure but also turned me into a zombie, foggy head and constantly tired"

That's a relief !

I was put onto Rampril but had to come off it as it gave me a persisting cough.

Mine went on for about 6 months before the doctor decided to change them - it did the trick!

Hi @lgray123 Welcome to the Forum :).
I began taking 2.5mg of Ramipril (18 years ago) and the dosage was increased over the years and now I am on 10mg a day and have been on this dose 5 years now. Never had any side effects at all :).
