Does anyone know if Ramapril can affect blood glucose levels. I am on several meds for hypertension and 3 weeks ago discovered that the Fosinopril that I had been on for 18 years is not made anymore and my gp put me on Ramipril.

Because I am on so many meds it has been very difficult to know if I was suffering anything from the Ramipril but I am thinking that is maybe a problem.

Thanks, Jude

I take Ramipril (10mg) without any obvious BG issues ( but then again I was taking for years before diagnosis so, as you say, it's hard to know). I also take a number of drugs for hypertension. My GP couldn't work out why my BP kept increasing. At the time of Dx it was 195/120. It's now ranges between 120/80 down to 115/70.
cheers

I'm on Ramipril 10mg for my kidneys and I don't think it's affected my BG's since taking it but the side effect of the dry cough I've experienced is a tad annoying. :|

Does the patient information suggest it may?

Ramipril is an ACE inhibitor...

Taken from WebMD:

ACE inhibitors are a good choice for people who have diabetes, because this medicine does not affect blood sugar levels and may help protect the kidneys. If you have diabetes, you may take these medicines if you do not have high blood pressure but have small amounts of protein in your urine (microalbuminuria), an early sign of kidney damage.

I believe I read somewhere that Beta Blockers can raise bg levels though are you taking a beta blocker?

I take 7.5mg of Ramipril a day and it doesn't raise my levels. As Sid says its a good med as it does more than just lower bp but helps your kidneys as well.

As I understand it, some Beta Blockers can elevate BG. I take Metoprolol ( toprol) and when by BP need to be reduced quite quickly the GP did not want to increase the dose for that reason. He added another drug instead ( plendil, felodur, felopidipine in different countries). It did the trick. Some doctors believe there is a correlation between the use of Beta Blockers and the onset of diabetes. I haven't seen any studies on that.

I started on this today, the usual 1.5mg and then up to 3mg in a few weeks time.
My understanding is that it can help to reduce BG levels.
