hi I was sent to hospital with a bad asthma attack, all ok now but the discharge letter says my random glucose level was 7.9 and I need re testing. Type 2 runs in my family and am a bit worried now. I am not overweight and excercise regularly. What is a normal random level ?

Welcome,
Depends when and what you ate so is hard to say if that is good or bad.

Welcome :) normal range for a non diabetic is 4-6. If you tested at 7.9 they'd be correct in recommending further testing. With diabetes your levels fluctuate depending on what you're doing, when you ate, etc..... but diabetic normal ranges differ from a non diabetic depending on whether it's before a meal or after a meal. It would be too hard for any of us here to comment whether or not you're diabetic as you'd need the tests done to find that out. I wish you the best. :)

Hi @Bevc61 ,

This page will give you a guideline of what your numbers should be...........

Unfortunately, being slim and fit doesn't mean that you can outrun the beast, although it may improve your chances.

Welcome to the forums and I wish you well for a positive (or perhaps negative ? ) outcome on your test results. :)

I wouldn't say that 7.9 was necessarily indicative of diabetes if it was a reading taken shortly after a meal or something particularly high in sugar. Lots of perfectly healthy people's levels spike for a short while depending on what they have eaten but would drop back down closer to 5.5 mmols or so quickly enough. Also, all kinds of other factors from stress to infection can increase a normal person's blood sugar. One reading on its own tells us nothing really (unless it was really high or really low). That said, it's good your doctor is cautious. I you are diabetic, or even pre-diabetic, the sooner you know the better. A test after fasting is probably the best next step...ask your doctor about it. Hope it all goes well.

Hello and Welcome ....hope you enjoy the forum

From one serious wheezer to another, the first thing that springs to mind is corticosteroids. Did you have a cortisone IV and have you had to take Prednisolone tablets? Steroids can send blood glucose levels soaring, so it might be an idea to see your GP for a proper test, then you will know where you stand.
