Rapid Reduction Of Insulin Requirements

Hi All,

I hope somone may be able to shed some light on this

I'm fairly new to this, I was Diagnosed in Jan 2013 at the age of 32, after being a year in to the mix I was under the impression I was coming out of the honeymoon period. It's taken several months of constant adjustments to get things back to a sensible level, for a number of reasons, I was so far off with my insulin dosages and also I was only taking my humilin I background insulin at night before bed. When we finally managed to get it near on right (around 3 weeks ago) I was taking:

Background:
Humulin I: 22 in the morning and 24 before bed
With Meals:
Humalog 10 with Breakfast 10 with lunch and 28->32 with my evening meal.

Last monday I went to work after a period of feeling better about things again but felt very achey, I went home and went to bed with flu like symptoms. The next day I was feeling much better in myself but had a bad stomach (i'll leave out the details!) Since this (and I assume it's a coinsidence) I've again had to reduce my insulin to:

Background:
Humulin I: 18 in the morning and 24 before bed
With Meals:
Humalog 8 with Breakfast 8 with lunch and 22 with my evening meal.

I'm a natural worrier, I've always been concerned about my diagnosis despite being re assured many a time by specilist nurses and the consultants. Is this just a symtom of the 'honeymoon' period? Is this normal for a full blown Type 1 diabetic? I've so many questions but afraid to ask as I just worry about what might be wrong. I'm under no illusion this will a hard thing to grasp but i've long presumed my background insulin when I'm all out Type 1 would remain quite steady, just taking into accound lifestyle changes/exercise etc.

These are not major reductions, these are just the tweaks we all need to make from time to time. Possibly the infection caused your blood sugar to rise, needing more insulin, and when it was over, your insulin need reduced again.

You are doing fine. Nothing to worry about. Do you carb count for your bolus doses? You might want to consider that for improved control.

Thanks Spiker,

I'm trying to carb count at a very basic level whilst awaiting a DAFNE course, but am so worried about hypo's especilly going to bed when it's lower i'm really just whacking near on the same in with every meal and trying to study what is going on after!

I understand that infections etc can cause bg levels to increase but this had been like it for weeks and weeks previously.

Thanks again.

Summer weather, winter weather and just small changes in our lifestyles can cause adjustments to doses..the list of what can cause us to have to adjust our insulin is amazing. I know that for some reason I am especially vulnerable to a bad hypo in July each year...and this for some reason has been ongoing for past 5 years. Last year.. With careful monitoring I evaded it...and already my basals have dropped from 19 to just over 14 because its heading towards July... By Oct all my rates will be going back up again. I'm not newly diagnosed.

The only thing to do is to monitor and to adjust...and be aware of things like going for walks on certain days or even shopping on certain days or weekends being different to working etc... Or even in my case just how much the onset of warmer months affects me....
