Diabetic Educators, people who do not listen, people who do not actively try to make their situation better, people who think I am in their textbook, people who think I am a standard T1D.
Hello! I just started having an odd reaction from the Medical Folks in the ER, the Hospital and my new GP. I am 51 years old and have been a T1D for 51 years. The only prescription medication I am currently taking is insulin. For some reason this makes their eyes open wide and they are shocked.

I cannot for the life of me figure out why Medical people think this is an accomplishment and I am hoping someone on here might have a neat idea.

Everyone on this Site is wonderful.

Only thing I can think of is that the 'standard model' of diabetes would tend to predict that it's a progressive disease and that after 51 years they are surprised that you don't have 1 foot in the grave!
Fortunately, with good control many people seem to be able to ignore the predictions.

Hi @rstonepal, with type 1 you can hit with many other auto immune conditions, plus complications too. Feel your self lucky and don't worry what they say, you seem to be doing really well. Type all your life, 51 years, wow, I wish you all the very best for another positive 51 years :)
Take care RRB

Perhaps it's because that IS an accomplishment? I can only hope that in 50 years I'm only on insulin.

You are a medical marvel, live long and prosper.

When you think that T1's would get a medal for 25 years and now we have to buy our own at 50 I think that it is a good sign that more T1's can live better for longer. Full, top marks to you...

Well I too think it's a wonderful achievement - so just be happy that you've given them something to be gobsmacked about...
