Reading Is always high

Hi. We will need to have some more information to enable us to give some suggestions. What insulin regime is he on typically it would be Basal/Bolus with a long and a short-acting insulin making around 5 injections per day? Does he count-carbs i.e. adjust his short-acting insulin at meal-times to match the carbs in the meal? Is he testing 2 hours after a meal? What sort of diet does he have? If possible avoid too many carbs. What sort of problems is he having? I suspect some will be emotional. There is another forum on this website for parents and children.

He doesn't have a particular diet but we calculate carbs for him
he tests after 2 hours a meal

My younger brother is new to type 1 disease
His reading is always high (>12)
any suggestion ?

As he is newly diagnosed he needs to keep a detailed bg diary and shows this to his diabetes team so that they can advise him on adjusting his insulin doses, his levels will stabilise but it does take time.

When I first took control of my own diabetes I tended to keep my levels higher than my Drs would have liked as I was anxious of hyping at school, and how people would react. It took me a while to get out of this habit, it felt like a lot to handle at first, so keeping them higher crossed off something I may have to deal with from my list. Obviously I feel differently now but I have 20 more years experience, and a realisation that looking after myself is more important than other people's perception.

Reading is always >12 - sounds like he needs to be taking more insulin.

You should really do a check to ensure the basal rate is correct, and then do a check to ensure his bolus is correct, and then check to ensure your are weighing and calculating carbs correctly, and ensure he is injecting 15-20min before each meal.

There is a lot to check, but if readings are always high its because 1 or more of these things is not correct. There is so work that needs to be done to fix this issue, its no simple task, best of luck!
