Reading one hour after breakfast

Hi some advice,
I had breakfast of one piece of wholemeal toast with soft cheese spread, also a cup of coffee. I checked my blood after one hour not two my reading was 9.0 is this normal?

To be honest it seems a little high but it is best to test after 2 hours though

Type 2 diagnosed 24/01/2013.
NovoRapid, Lantus, Victoza, Metformin (sr), Simvistatin

To be honest, I didn't test before breakfast this is the first time I have tested after one hour it was just to see what happens eating this toast. Previous readings two hours after meals have been 6.2. 7.6. 6.1 7.3. 6.5 7.4. 6.2. 7.2. 6.8. 7.0. 6.6. 7.0. 7.3. 6.8 These readings are after different meals I will test again after the two hours and see what it brings up

Bet you're relieved!

If food raises our BG (and it doesn't always) then the highest spike is usually around 1 hr, then it trails off.

NHS guidelines say type 2s should be under 7.8 at 2 hrs - which I'm sure you already know - but I aim for lower on the principle that lower is better! :)

The things that affect when the highest BG peak is, are how much fibre, protein and fat are in the meal. They all slow the digestion down, so the peak may be a bit slower and lower.

Hope that helps.

Just out of interest I've just tested - 1 hr after breakfast - and I'm 10.6. I had 2 rashers of bacon and a fried egg (fried in the bacon fat, no extra oil), and a cup of instant coffee with skimmed milk.

So, is this too high? I'm not sure what I can do to lower it, other than take more drugs, and when i was on an extra Gliclazide I started having occasional hypos. Since I've dropped that I don't really get below 5, and 2 hrs after a meal am usually between 5 and 7.

With a high protein reasonable fat brekkie like that, it is either the coffee, or another weirdness...
You didn't have bread, did you?

I should test the same breakfast, minus the coffee, and see what happens.

Some coffee (cheap instant) spikes me nastily, while posh proper coffee doesn't. Another excuse to be a food snob with an empty purse!

Jenny Ruhl (Ms bloodsugar101) low carb expert, suggests that we stay as low as poss, preferably below 8 at all times - but do check that on her website, cos its months since I read it!

I'd wager the coffee has a hand in that. I've pretty much given it up for the time being. It's not so much what it does to me scores as how I feel after drinking it; like a ginormous adrenalin hit. Not pleasant.

Mmm, interesting thought about coffee. Would tea have the same effect? I'll try same brekkie tomorrow minus coffee. Have walked the dog now and am 6.5.

I am always higher in the morning - pos. DP - but it doesn't matter what I try it seems to happen. I haven't tried getting up in the night though - not sure I fancy that.

I know in my case that my 1 hour readings are ALWAYS higher if I have a mug of tea immediately after finishing eating. I have discovered that as caffeine raises BS levels it is best to avoid it with or immediately after a meal, and have your caffeine fix on its own as a snack between meals, so your body isn't coping with both the meal and the caffeine at the same time. I have experimented a lot recently with this, and now just have water with meals (or wine!), and my tea between meals.

Thanks for that advice. I will definitely try that. Do you get different results with instant coffee and freshly brewed coffee like @Brunneria mentioned? I tend to have Nescafe Gold during the week and fresh stuff when husband is at home at the weekends.

I don't drink coffee at home. I drink copious amounts of tea though!

I'm finding that if I have milk in my getting home cup of tea my BG pre dinner tend to be 0.5 higher than if I have it black.... I've not eaten anything since lunch.
