Fasting overnight. Reading at 08:00 was 8.3 (I must have eaten something in my dreams as I qas 7.1 when I went to bed !

It seems I have spikes that I wasn't really aware of as I frequently tested after 2 hours only.

Hi WeeFurgus, The porridge & milk will be the culprit, Full Fat Yogurt & Berries will be the answer I have that with sprinkled Flaxseed and also sprinkled Granola not much.

You didn't do a 2hr at lunchtime I think your 2 slices of Seed Sensations will be too much for you, many here can only manage 1 slice. Test at 2 hrs next time.

The Minced Beef Pie was it home made or purchased?, if purchased you need to read the label and look for the carbs, not the 'of which are sugars' just the carbs. the pastry will be the item that will spike but if bought in then the gravy may well have carbs as well.

I bet your last reading of 9.7 was a rogue reading and best ignored now. Had it been me, I would have re-tested. We all get these weird rogue readings from time to time.

I think you know you should dispense with porridge after those spikes, and also pastry (and shop bought pies if it was shop bought). Those meals had too many carbs and therefore too much glucose ended up in your bloodstream. Carbs = Glucose.

Spikes can happen at any time between 30 minutes and several hours, depending what was eaten. We just tend to test at 2 hours to have some sort of standard. Personally when I test, I test at 1hr and 2hrs. If I haven't got back to base I keep testing every half an hour until I am happy.

Your fasting reading seems to have been affected by the Dawn Phenomenon. This is when the liver dumps glucose in the system to wake us up and help us start the day. It is quite normal and natural, although not everyone experiences it. I assume you tested as son as you got out of bed (after washing hands)? Any activity, even a shower or just pottering about will encourage your liver to dump more glucose.

Thanks guys. I'll give you my readings and consumption for today soon. I'm just waiting for 2 hours to pass since I ate dinner. I know they're going to be better than yesterdays as I've been very cautious today. Tomorrow I'm going to experiment with a fish pie topped with mashed caulifower rather than the mashed potato I normally use.

I've also cleared my cupboards out of all the 'dangerous' food and sauces etc. Who knew that low-fat ambrosia was bad (but delicous!).
