Oh man, the op's story annoyed me so much it finally prompted me to sign up!

Just wanted to say that without testing I would have no (relative) idea where I am. It is vitally important imo and go hand in hand with working out how much and what to eat (especially after doing the DAFNE course). I'm type 1 (apprecizate the op is type 2) and have been for 28 years and they encouraged me to do it from day one! Granted it took rather too long for me to finally come round to it (early 20's) but it would feel odd not to now.

Saying that my old GP reduced my repeat prescription form 4 to 2 boxes of strips which meant I had to re-order every few weeks. I went straight back in and had a word.

Anyway, good on you for sorting it out and good luck... :)

Wow, this has been a very interesting read...I must be lucky as have had great care from the nhs since being dx in August....I see the nurse practioner regularly who happens to specialise in diabetes (struck lucky there)....She believes is low carb (not 0) but low...She also promotes this site, another plus eh...Along the way she sent me on a 6 week (2 hour per week) course to learn about diabetes... The course was called the XPERT course (not expert) and gave a little insight into diabetese and how it effects me...I do NOT test myself and was never told to... I did wonder why but it was at the course that I learnt that not everybody needs to...I learnt that many of T2 are boarder line diabetics and a low carb healthy diet is all that is needed...I am next due to have a blood test beginning of March, It will be the telling if diet is enough alone for me...Although dx in August and although I have touched on trying to eat healthily...I only started to really take it all seriously a week ago...The low carb diet is working for me as lost 4lb in the first week and I feel less tired which tells me that something is working on the inside...I don't know what my day to day readings are but will have the blood test in March...I think if it gives you peace of mind and a guide to what you are eating then continue testing...It's a personal thing and we are all different...I wish you all the luck in the world in getting your strips from your gp...**** diabetese eh
