Really confused over diet

I have just come back from part 2 of my DEAL (Diabetes Education and Awareness for Life) course. Today was about diet. I am really confused as I have been told to reduce my intake of what I thought were OK foods. These are nuts, I eat about 6 as a snack most days, apparently they are very bad for you as they have a huge number of calories. Avocado pears have a huge unhealthy fat content and one should not eat more than one small avocado per week and cheese, again far to full of animal fat. Butter should be replaced with marge. However, it seems that I could have 4 squares of chocolate, a week, two fruit yogourts a day, I asked about the sugar in them and the dietician said that it is not high enough to make a difference, and sandwiches made with grannery bread for lunch. She also said that if you lower your carbohydrate intake you will cause your liver to work overtime to produce glucose to compensate and will end up with a liver problem. I don't know where I am now. I have been cutting down on carbohydrates and not eating anything with sugar and have been testing blood glucose levels which now average about 6 -6.5 before meals and up to 8.00 after meals. I'll be seeing the doctor just before Christmas. I am tempted to just carry on with what I am doing but I don't want a liver problem. Does anyone have views? Thank you from a very confused happycat :?:

Fats make no impact on blood glucose. CARBS DO!
thus I would say. "control the carbs and ignore the fats. Also VERY FEW "experts" would warn anyone off avocados
One study a whole ago showed that people eating a high fat high calorie diet LOST weight if they ate few carbs.
I'm sure most of the people who deliver these courses truly believe the GUFF they give out and want to help people, but somewhere at the top[in DUK perhaps?] there are some closed minds. I've bumped heads with them often.
However, their words carry weight. Mine DON'T.
I would say "Eat to your meter" is the best way to stay healthy. Make sure you eat a wide variety of veggies and keep off processed food and you'll get all the nutrients you need. .
I personally would never travel down a road that required me to increase medication regularly.

Hana, I must say that your words of wisdom are more important to me than many of the false claims that are made by the so called experts.

That's what makes this Forum so good.

Happycat, Hope it all goes well with your diet,

Roy :)

Hi,

having just had a terse lecture from GP re: diabetic diet and research and "no need to test levels" if T2, I'd REALLY appreciate the link or details of that research, as my GP has just totally dismissed all my concerns and queries re: carbs and diet and BG levels spiking etc., telling me I need to "starve body and pancreas of all fat". :***:

Thanks Hannadr for your balancing and sensible advice. I was diagnosed in September and have not had much help except from here. It is so hard to have been fortunate not to have any illness and then to be told that you have a life threatening condition and to realise that the medics are just giving out conflicting advice. You and have made me feel a lot better now. We were warned in the first session not to go on the internet as forums like this one only have lay people with their opinions which do not have any creditability. Guess facing the illness day to day doesn't count? Thanks again

Nuts and Avocado's are very high in fats and therefore calories so are best avoided if you are trying to lose weight, if you are not overweight I see no reason to avoid them, so what you were told on the DEAL course may have been correct if you are trying to lose weight.

Sid, you are correct about avocados and nuts. I am currently at my target weight and so don't have that problem. Thanks for your response. :)
