Hello jax

Firstly, Welcome to the forum. And second, please accept my apologies for hijacking your question when I discussed complications/information new members should receive. I hope you can forgive my bad manners.

I'm newish to this forum too having been diagnosed as type 2 in late January. The diagnosis was a shock & like yourself I struggled to get control of my blood glucose levels. I wanted my BG to be ok immediately, which was totally unrealistic. But that's what I wanted anyway. I thought I was eating healthily after diagnosis (whole grains, porridge, fruit etc) and was SO frustrated that my blood glucose readings were still in the high teens. Thankfully I found this wonderful website, & I honestly believe the information I got from its members saved my life. Learning how other diabetics managed their disease has been invaluable. I knew nothing about low carb eating or "eating to your meter." I now follow these principles & within a couple of weeks I was achieving BG levels between 5 - 7.5, much much improved. It's still a work in progress. I ask questions fairly regularly, as I've learnt I can trust the replies I get back from the members. I've had tons of good advice & tips and have never felt as though my question was dumb. I hope you'll be feeling better very soon & more confident about managing your blood glucose levels. My very best wishes.

Ali. :)

Unfortunately I received zero information for the first 2 weeks after diagnosis. Perhaps that's something I should raise when I next see my DNS. Thankfully I had the wherewithal to search online & found this site. Which I have to say has been a godsend. The new members pack from daisy1 gave me all the information I needed at that time, including info about complications. I found it all very useful. And of course being able to ask questions from members with way more knowledge than me has helped enormously. I was only diagnosed late January this year, so it's still all sinking in. Educating myself via this site has helped me move forward. There's no way my HBA1c will remain at 123 after making the lifestyle/dietary changes I would not have known about without the benefit of the forum members advice.
Hi Ali, I'm still learning too. I learned a lot here and got mine down too. I started a food journal, I only count carbs and track my glucose in it. On the front page is my journal about my day, how I'm feeling etc and the opposite side is the food diary. I drink a minimum 1/2 oz water per lb of body weight a day. I walk daily and this week have increased now to 10,000 steps a day (tho not all at once bc I like being outdoors :)) I don't low carb but I do moderate (ie 30 carbs /meal and 15 carbs/snack) and try to not eat after 10 PM. I really don't not eat anything but do practice portion control. I started with eating to my meter to see what a particular food was doing. Presently I test fasting and 2 hrs post meal. I've been doing a lot of research and this in particular was more fascinating to me than the other link shared. All the best to you.
