Really stuck on losing weight.. and don't know why

Hi there

I'm just after some advice and to see if anyone else has the same issues. I have been following a low carb diet for nearly 2 months now along with a regular exercise programme combining cardio and strength training. Although BG control has improved greatly, which I am very pleased about.. the weight is simply not shifting. I think my diet is excellent, and I reckon I'm on about 1200 calories a day and not high fat. In 8 weeks I have lost about 3 kilos (I have probably about another 8-10 to lose). It took about 3 weeks to see any weight change and since those 3 weeks no shift at all. Admittedly I probably do look different and yes, I get the fact that muscle weighs more, but I'm still surprised at no further weight loss on the scales. I am exercising at least 5 times a week 45 minutes at a time.

Any advice or hearing of others with same issues would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks
pip

Hi. It must be frustrating. What sort of meals do you have as part of the low-carb diet? In note you say you are keeping the fats down. I wonder if you are worrying more about the fat than the carbs? You need to focus on the carbs and portion sizes; perhaps you are already. Do let us have some idea of meal plans.

First of all you say you have lost 3 kilos in 8 weeks. That is quite respectable but considering your calorie intake and exercise I would have expected a little more weight loss.

I have just been reading Dr. Briffa's book but have not had much chance to try out some of what he says although I was doing some things right, apparently, before I read his book.

I mention him because in his book he explains that carbs cause insulin to flow and insulin has the facility to put fat into your fat cells but it does not have the means to take the fat out again. What causes the relevant hormone to flow to take fat out of fat cells is fat and protein. This suggests that your "not high fat" approach could be working against you.

Having said all that I can't see what is wrong with losing half a stone in 8 weeks.

Hi

Maybe I can share. Similarly I've been improving diet and increasing exercise - but weight going up :( Definitely I needed to gain strength, so expected some weight gain associated with muscle gain. I have also learned that heavy exercise always creates inflammation which involves extra water retention...can create very up and down day to day weighings!

Recently I was able to do relatively high level reliable body mass index analysis - on age & sex calibration I "only" need to lose 1.5 kgs... BUT to be achieved by losing 4.5 kg fat and gaining 3 kg muscle. As a post menopausal, Type 1 insulin dependent 62 kg woman this is not NOT a small target... :?
