Rebounds and corrections

Feeling a bit rubbish this morning after a hypo kicked in before bed last night (3.2). I had to treat it twice at the time to get back above 4 and I think this has caused a rebound (I had a GlucoJuice and then a cereal bar before I went to sleep). At the time I figured it was probably right to have the same again thinking the cereal bar would work a bit slower overnight than the juice. Also, there was a bit of alcohol in the mix from earlier (nothing excessive). Set an alarm for 03:00, woke up and tested to find myself at 12.9. Is it likely that taking the same amount of carbs twice to treat it in combination with the liver busy with a bit of alcohol from earlier caused the rebound?

My meter told me at the time to take a 2 unit correction but I only took 1 and ended up back at 4.9 4 hours later at about 07:00. After a bit of searching this morning I found a couple of threads where corrections after hypos were discussed and have seen that you're apparently not meant to correct at all after one - is this right as I've only been told to just correct if I'm classed as hyper by my meter.

When I treat hypos I tend to stick to the books, so I would give my self 15g quick acting carbs and then test a short time after....

If I knew I had no active bolus on board and my test showed me back up on target, that would be it for me.....

I think taking a slower acting carb can be useful but together with reduced corrections and alcohol there is just too many variables to consider....

A liver response if perfectly plausible, or even just a stronger dawn rise than normal...

how much alcohol did you have?

are you on a split basal and if so, did you reduce it before bed?

Hi @novorapidboi26 yes I'm on a split basal - I take it early evening and morning though (around 19:30 and 07:30 each day) and take slightly more in the evening. I only took the second amount of carbs because when I tested again 20 minutes after the juice (15 minutes never seems enough time for me to start rising even with liquid carbs) I took at first I was still below 4.0 and I didn't feel comfortable going to sleep like that. I think I was in the tail end of my last bolus dose (took 3 hours before). Alcohol wise I had 2 cans of Coors with my evening meal.

I wouldn't say thats a lot of alcohol and may not have needed a basal reduction for overnight, but everyone is different....

Do you see a BG reduction with a couple of cans?

Not usually with that brand and that amount but I've seen with other brands or on the occasion I've had more I would probably spike before sleep and drop back down overnight. I only drink occasionally though (sometimes not for weeks) so I could maybe be a bit sensitive to it's effects on BG.

I think you did the correct thing until the correction - I wouldn't have done any at all.

Saying that I'm hypo now...

So it is right what I've been reading not to correct at all after a hypo? Why is that please - trying to understand it as my meter wanted me to correct the later hyper with more than I actually took?

You are likely to have a liver dump when you have a hypo (for me its less than about 3.5 it might be different level for you). |After you have recovered your liver with take some of the sugar out of your bloodstream to replenish itself (after hypos your more likely to have more hypos for this reason).

I find the drop in bg post hypo can be really variable and you'll be better off testing more often and being on the safe side. I wont correct post hypo and I'm on a CGM so I can see almost live what's happening.

Re your meter - I find they need to be taken with a massive pinch of salt as they don't take into account variables such as hypos or exercise or Anything outside of the current number and carbs. Don't follow it blindly - it'll only give you trouble if you do.

Aah that does sound plausible thanks for explaining - probably in my case with last night's hypo my liver was busy working on the alcohol from earlier at the time of the hypo and then reacted with a dump after I'd gone to sleep then on top of the carbs I had.

I am trying to keep a close eye on it (I've tested after breakfast as well this morning and seem to be back on track). I try not to follow it blindly as I'm honeymooning at the minute - I think I may have taken just 1 unit too many for the snack I had last night to cause the hypo. I do have things in there like exercise settings which I try to log in the bolus advice before I take a dose - I think I was just trying to be compliant in my foggy 3AM sleepy state!

Thank you both for your replies and help :)
