just wanted to introduce myself and ask if there is anyoe who can give me advise on the type of food s to eat or not as the case may be...I have been waiting for some weks for an ppointment with a nutritionalist appointment...so any help appreciated. :D

Hi Angie and welcome to the forum. Please have a good read round the forum and you will find plenty of advice, some of it confusing, about food and diets. Please read and see if there is anything that you think you could do and then come back and ask us questions about it.
The main problem for diabetics is carbohydrate and the effect it has on your blood sugar levels. An important thing to do is to test your blood before eating then, test again two hours later to see what effect that meal had on your blood sugar levels.Have you been given a blood testing meter by your doctor or nurse?

I haven't been told much by my diabetic nurse....she has advised me to start checking the details on the food labels so I can reduce sugar and fates....but apart from that she has told me to that someone will be in touch to arrange approintmets for a retina check and a podiatrist. That was a few weeks ago....I have really been left to go it alone at the moment. I have looked on the internet but there is a lot of conflictring info...so I really don't want to make it worse than it already is.

Reduced the amount of sugars is a good start.read the food labels. The total amount of carbs is what you want to look out for.Personally I stick to food labels that are under 10gm per 100gm of carbs but that is my personal preference.Next time you see the nurse/doctor tell them you want to be able to test so that you can control your blood sugars better and get a meter from them.
You will find a lot of conflicting info ,both on the net and even here on the forum.Try out the diets and see what suits you.It is all trial and error because we are all different and what suits one does not always suit another.

Thanks for the info....it's strange having to check everything you buy ...I suppose you get used to it.....she did tell me to look for max 10g in 100g of sugar and 5g in 100g of fat...so that is what I am doing at the moment. It is hard as this came as a complete shock to me......I was putting on weight and very tired and the doctor kept telling me she thought it was probably due to my age and likely to be the menopause.....she eventually sent me for blood tests and I was told they were ok. At the same time I was attending a dermatologist as I have psoriasis....asn it had broken out bad in the last few months...my dermatologist called my dr and asked for my blood test results....this wa ladt month over 2months since I had the tests. Next thing I know I have a voice mail message from my dr apologising for missing the test that wa wrong and askin me to make an appointment. I suppose I am lucky it was an accident that I found out....now I need to eal with it :)

Hi Angieb.

A belated welcome to the forum. See you have had some excellent advice from Sue. I am sure that other members will chip in when they are all awake. What I would love for a Saturday morning lie in. :?

Ken.

Hey angie.

You sure struck lucky with that babe Sue, she got the info you need real quick. smart work Sue.

Hi angieb,

Welcome to the forum! :D I'm sure you'll find this a helpful, friendly and very supportive place to be! Have recently joined and learnt lots more here than was originally given by diab. clinic! Sue has certainly given you quality advice as above! :) The info given was in the 'regular pack' given out by personal experience and suspect you may have been given same plus a talk from the nurse on hand.

It all seems kinda overwhelming at first but can assure you it will get easier including the checking food info etc. Take care specially with things like yoghurts and cereal, they can be higher than you think they would be but in a little while I'll bet you'll get the hang of things in general!

anyways, certainly as advised by others above, feel free to read around this site and hope you will find the info you need to know!

best wishes, salsasue

Before I found my way here I'd pretty much eliminated added sugar to anything and my fasting blood sugar dropped a considerable amount between the fasting tests. That is one of the most positive things you can do while you are making up your mind what to do about the diet.

And exercise. I have been a bit lax over the last week, but when I execise regularly I have a much greater tolerance for carbs and sugar generally. I aim to do 30 minutes on my execise bike at least 5 times a week. Regualr exercise is what has really made the differnce to my blood sugar.

Regular testing with my meter has helped me measure my success and learn as I go along.

Whatever you opt for, you have to be able to stick to it long term. Diabetes is with you for life :? Good luck, ask as many questions as you like.
