Afternoon All,

Just thought I'd say hello having lurked since Christmas.

This forum has been a great resource for me in helping through the initial confusion (& denial) following my diagnosis three months ago.

I've had symptoms (neuropathy, blurred vision, thirst etc.) for the past few years, but being a typical 43 year old male did nothing about them....

I was initially diagnosed with fasting levels of 13.8 at Christmas & put on 1000mg/day of Metformin & 600mg of Gabapentin.
I started to test in Jan & was shocked to see my levels spike to the low 20's at times- whilst following the diet sheet given to me by the DB Nurse.

Without you guys, I wouldn't have learn't about the direct relationship between carbs & BS.

With exercise & carb reduction (down to circa 50gm/day) I'm now seeing levels between 6-9mmol with occasional spikes into double figures. Although it does seem like my body rejects any form of carb on some days?

My Doctor has just doubled my Metformin to 2000mg/day, so longer term I hope to see 5-8mmol as my norm.

I just need to work on my energy levels now!

Cheers,

Steve.

Hi Steve,

Congratulations. You are doing really well. Lack of energy may well be due to insufficient fat. The more carbs you cut the more fat you need to replenish those energy levels. A fine balance that will require trial and error, but once you get it right you should have more energy than ever before. Also, adding extra fat to meals that contain a few carbs will help keep those spikes down. I'm afraid Metformin won't, it doesn't work that way.

Carry on the good work, and keep posting. :)

Hi @steve1972

Welcome to the forum. Congratulations on getting some control. It looks to me as you have already sussed out the two biggies in my mind: Testing your levels and reducing Carbs. This is a great resource and use it to ask any questions you have .
