Evening all,
Was diagnosed type 2 back in November with a HbA1c of 74. Went back for a repeat test a month later after much exercising and dieting and had dropped it to 60. With weather really hampering my efforts to get out on my bike as much as I would like I decided to really start educating myself on diet which is when I came across the forum (which I have already taken a huge amount of info and encouragement from).

I have two questions really, firstly does anyone have any recommendation for a glucose monitor as being someone into stats and working with numbers I really would like to get a hold of how what I am eating is effecting my BG. Was quite surprised when my GP said monitoring would be of little use to me but reading about seems like this is fairly common so looks like I may have to fund myself.

Secondly, where I have seen people talking about their fasting BG levels, is this simply testing at home using a home glucose monitor? Just wondered if there was any distinction between a fasting test you would have done at the doctors and simply testing your BG at home with your own monitor after your 8-10 hour fast?

Many thanks

Hi @Sirob_Leroi

Welcome to the forums.

Self funding? Think about your ongoing costs. The SD Codefree has the cheapest test strips and is adequate for most peoples needs. Some of the forum members also have a discount code for bulk buys.

Fasting? Forum members sometimes talk about the first reading of the day as their fasting reading. At the hospital or GP, you'd have to stop eating by 20:00 the night before (or whatever the local instructions are.)

Thank you for your welcomes and thank you for your advice! I am off to order one in. What is the most widely used measurement in the UK mmol/l or mg/dl?

Hi and welcome. I believe your own fasting test gives similar results to a hospital fasting test. I do remember something about with or without plasma but not sure whether the tests are different or what the impact would be?

Purchased the codefree mmol/l from Amazon so just have to wait for it to come back now. Thanks again
