Well not what i was hoping for just before Xmas! Had a 24hr blood pressure monitor and they weren't happy with the results so took blood and then a call out of the blue from the nurse who started the call with "you have diabetes", now on metformin and a low carb diet. Hopefully i'll get my levels under control by my review in March but a huge change in eating and drinking habits! I've lurked on the site for the past few weeks and have found some great advice so thanks for been there.

Welcome to the forums. This is a great place with lots of inspiration and support. I am fairly new to T2 myself. I read a lot here that has helped me. I am also fortunate to have a very supportive DN at the GP who not only supports but encourages my fasting and low card efforts. I also like popping on the fasting blood sugar post to record it most days (I have had a few I did not take it first thing)

You can do this

Hi @Over the hill you've posted at a time when the forum is very quiet. I'm sure more people will be along to welcome you in due course. Do you have any burning questions meanwhile?

I was diagnosed T2 on 5th Dec. Gutted but not a bad thing, I'm active by visiting the gym a couple of times a week, but I was equally if not more active visiting the pantry. I phoned docs after nearly passing out when driving - I'd felt light headed for months too. So a blood test came back 53. I've been prescribed vitamin D and B12 as they were low too, but told to manage diabetes through diet and to read up and research as much as possible. I'm awaiting an appointment with a dietician.

I've been the same as you and I only posted my first thread yesterday. I feel so much uncertainty having little information to compare. I'm remaining positive and adding more exercise to my routine.

Wishing you all the best.

Thanks everyone, I've been a little naughty over Xmas but back to it now (nowhere near as naughty as I would have been last year!). Still struggling with not having potatoes, rice, pasta etc but getting there!

Hi @Over the hill and welcome to the forum that no-one wants to be a member of!
Now we are passed Christmas, if I was in your position, I would gradually reduce carbs in your diet, if you lower them too fast you can end up with keto flu, basically your body objecting to the sudden drop. When I was first diagnosed I dropped to 100g per day, then edged downwards to under 45g/day. I also started testing my bloods sugars before and after meals to see how my body reacted to different meals. I was also prescribed Metformin.
I wouldn’t wait for the DN appt to get into a new routine, and just remember the DN may well be anti low carb and testing, you won’t get prescribed a meter and strips unless you are very lucky.
If you want advice on which meter to choose we can help you with that.

I have been trying to stick to between 100 to 130g of carbs a day which i seem to be managing. Miss everything but guess i'll get used to it!
