I was recently quite unwell, and my GP thinks that I am suffering from gluten intolerance, I have stopped having gluten and in the first five days, most of my readings have been below 10, I have had 3 hypo's and feeling physically a lot better, has anybody else had experience with this and how did you manage for carbohydrates such as bread etc. I feel that my sugars have dropped due to the diet. Any advice or stories of experience are greatly appreciated

I tested negative twice for gluten intollerance, yet I can't eat wheat without it giving me the runs ...

I don't eat gluten free bread, I just eat the fillings of sandwiches. This means I eat less carbs. I can eat oats and other cereals, so you may be able to.

Its quite difficult to eat snacks out as many items are off the menu.

I am a wheat intolerant T2, I have found that it is the trigger for my IBS and gives me the runs. But I'm on metformin not insulin.

How I cope is that I just don't eat it, as Denise said I just eat the fillings and not the bread and I have found that my bg imporoved tremedously, when I cut out the bread pasta etc. I now eat very little of the starchy carbs and have halved my metformin, but how it would work with insulin I can't say - sorry.

Hi Alisha2

My son is a T1 and a Coeliac (on gluten free diet) he was diagnosed diabetic at the age of 3 and coeliac at the age of 8. He is now 14. He has no ill effects now from the gluten free diet. You say your Doctor THINKS. When James was having upset stomachs, smelly No.2's he was given a blood test which said yes he is coeliac then he had to carry on eating gluten then had a biopsy to actually confirm. It could be that you just have a wheat intolerance. If it is actually confirmed as Coeliac then you can have quite a few things on prescription. Also most supermarkets have gluten/wheat free products. James has only bread now on prescription Juvela fresh white sliced (straight from the bag) cos NHS restrictions. I also tend to buy our own pasta, pizzas, flour, biscuits, Genius wholemeal bread is quite nice and make a lot of homemade things.

Some websites that you may find useful are
Juvela
Glutafin
Dietary Specials
and may be able to get some free samples from them. Coeliac.org.uk is a very good website also.

Hpe this helps :)

p.s. Our DSN did say that a lot of gluten free products tend to have more sugar than others, but this does not seem to affect James' diet.

If you are planning more tests then check with your doctor, I was told I needed to be eating gluten for the some types to be accurate.

I was told a few years ago that i had problems with wheat and gluten but the western doctors don't recognize the hair analysis but everything that they said was correct. Currently I am on a gluten challenge but still haven't set a date for the blood test. So far I have had more hypo's since I have increased my gluten intake. I need to get the date set as it needs to be done. The dietitian said she would write to my GP to ask for the blood test. My appointment was in December which is a long time to be waiting for the dietitian to write a letter. I will chase this up as I need to have that test.
