recently on pump having the worst hypos

@Gembles84 - Hi, sorry to hear you've been having nasty hypos on your pump. It looks to me that the type of meals you are struggling with are quite high in fat. I find for these type of meals I give my insulin pretty much straight before I eat (instead of waiting to eat for 20 minutes after I've given the insulin) and I give myself a dual wave (about 40-45% up front and the rest over a number of hours, usually between 4-5 hours depending on what I've eaten (especially for pizza, fish/chips from chippy, curry, chinese or paella etc). Anything high in fat is going to take a LONG time to be absorbed. The square bolus should be used for things like eating popcorn or snacks in the cinema etc over a period of time, this is what my DSN told me anyway and I rarely use this feature. It takes a lot of practice but once you've nailed it, it feels great! :) I had quite a few episodes like this when I first started on the pump but once you get your head around it you will LOVE your pump! :) Definitely get the book Pumping Insulin by John Walsh, very informative book!

I usually have a Tesco paella ready meal once in a while and I was having hypos pretty much straight after I'd eaten it but because I thought rice was quite quickly absorbed when, in fact, because it's quite fatty it was taking a longer time than I thought to be absorbed. So now I give myself a dual bolus, about 40-45% upfront and over about 4 hours with this meal which seems to work for me (don't use my workings out though, you will have to see how your body reacts to different foods, everyone is different).

Hope you can get it sorted!

Hello @Spicey245 Thank you that's very much helpful and getting info from people who have experienced it already really helps. I've been monitoring how I'm going and fingers crossed after 3 nights in a row of lows...I think I've sussed it! I know its all trial and error...feel like I'm starting from scratch again! Really helpful to know about the high in fat foods and that makes sense as to why I can often go high really late on (not just because I've just downed a bottle of Lucozade!) but quite often just in general! Thanks once again

Well, you'll laugh at this, after me giving you all that 'useful' information yesterday I went out for a Chinese meal with my husband last night... needless to say I didn't quite give myself enough insulin up front (gave around 45% upfront and the rest over 5 hours) and had a huge spike around an hour after I started eating my meal! :banghead: It went right up to around 15 but then came back down to around 6/7 and stayed pretty stable for the rest of the night! Lol! So even though I've been on the pump for over a year, I still don't always get it right either! ;) I must remember to give at least 50-55% upfront in future!! Thank GOD for the Freestyle Libre!! ;)
