Red Wine Good for BS!

Hi,
Red wine I have just read lowers your bs! Is this my new year back on trak? At the risk of sounding alcoholic how much of the stuff can I drink? All things in moderation probably. A couple of glasses a week? Can I mix it in with my xmas pud to lower the g. load? Cheers to a bit of good news
 
When you drink Red wine - your liver quickly kicks into action to eliminate the alcohol. The liver can only do one thing at one, so while it is eliminating alcohol, it is not producing glucose and kicking it out into your system.

Some people find that drinking a glass or 2 of Red wine with their evening meal helps keep their BG levels low.

Some people think a glass later in the evening can help with Dawn Phenomenon.
 
I regularly have a glass or two of dry white of an evening and it makes no difference to BS levels either 2 or 4hrs later or the following morning. The trick seeems to be to test regularly and find out what you individually can tolerate. After reading some of the posts on this forum there is a vast difference in what people can and cannot eat / drink. It is a voyage of discovery!
 
dib - it's only RED wine that has that beneficial effect due to the resveratrol it contains.
 
Hiya! A glass or two of red wine in the evening definitely lowers my BG fasting level the next morning - it has no effect the evening I drink it, so I can only assume that alcohol has a delayed effect on BGs. I have to be careful with my insulin if I have a couple of glasses of red wine, so I've had to cut the wine out at the moment while I sort my insulin doses out, but I was hoping to get it on prescription :lol: Vinegar has the same effect on me, but I prefer the wine!

I'm going to try this and see if a glass a day or every other day will help. It's a shame it is not white wine. I prefer white lol
 
I find that alcohol does lower my BG but when I have an alcohol free day or two I pay for it with slightly higher readings for a couple of days until my system gets under control again.
However, alcohoo does cause me to gain weight. :( Not what I want having reached a target I was happy with a year ago. Think that the apple cider vinegar is OK as I never seem to want more than two tablepoons of it per day. :roll:

With respect to everyone but I don't think that using alcohol to keep bg stable is a good idea. I enjoy a glass of red wine (2 evenings a week) but would never want to be in a position where I needed to drink to control my diabetes, it's far better to look at other means than to be dependent on alcohol every evening to bring down bg.

I agree that you shouldn't use red wine in order to control your levels. But its just nice to know that when you fancy a glass you have have one without any problems :)

Hi daisy, yes I realise that, I just prefer white and since I have had to cut out so many foods that I have enjoyed over the years I allow myself this treat.

Drinking regularly IS a good idea. Obviously not to a level where you are drunk, and certainly not to excess, but there is TONS of information that points to moderate alcohol (even daily) intake promoting good heart health.

What a BONUS if it also helps keep BGs down!

Red wine does seem to have a small effect on my morning bgs but I still struggle with DP.It doesnt seem to help me put weight on which I need :( It isnt fair is it clearviews

It is not as simple as saying red wine is good for diabetics.

If you are currently teetotal then why would you want to drink to improve your control?.

If you have high triglycerides then it is not for you.

If you have neuropathy then drinking can make it worse and increase the pain and tingling.

If you are well controlled then the odd glass is not going to do you any harm but the calorific content can be high and so you may gain weight.

Some of us have other health problems and alcohol may be contra-indicated with some medications.

Well wine is zero on the glycemic index so this means it won't increase your blood sugars. It doesn't have to be red, any color will do. Alcohol, in general, lowers your blood sugar. Scientific American magazine ran an article March 14 2007 that alcohol is super good for your cardiovascular system, in many ways:

1) Raises blood HDL (good cholesterol)

2) Lowers blood LDL (what they call bad cholesterol, but it's not really as if it's too low puts you at higher risk for cancer)

3) Lowers the oxidation of LDL cholesterol (researchers believe only oxidized cholesterol causes blood clots that may lead to heart attack)

4) Lowers levels of fibrogen in blood (lessens the risk of blod clot formation)

5) Exerts other anticlotting actions (lessens platlet stickiness, raises levels of prostacyclin, lowers levels of thromboxane)

6) Improves conditioning of heart muscle (Imparts better resistance to damage from oxygen deprivation)

7) Lessens insulin resistance (Lessens key risk factors for type 2 diabetes and atherosclerosis - hardening of the arteries)

It recommends 1 glass of wine or hard liquor for women and 2 glasses of wine or liquor for men per day.

"The collected data make a strong case for the cardiac benefits of controlled drinking."

Aren't 8 reasons enough?
