I’ve been on low carbs since end June and reducing meds as I go with medical advice. My go to diabetic nurse has left practice sadly but put plan of care in place for me prior to leaving. Like some others my blood sugars have been higher in morning and coming down after about 10 or 11 am. They are 5.2 at time of writing. I’m now down to trulicity 1.5 mags once a week, metformin in morning and glic 40 mags. I’ve invested in libre for the process which seems to show dips in night with corresponding rise as presumably my helpful little liver bails me out. My carbs are around 20-40 a day, I walk between 4-10k a day(poor elderly dog), but have been nervous about further reducing meds because of that morning rise. My weight has dropped by 36lbs and I’m off all my bp meds, just wondered what you all thought? The plan was for glic to go next then metformin and if I’m lucky enough trulicity last.

Probably should add that I’m a little nervous to reduce meds further

Probably liver is using up its glycogen stores. Which is good. Continue keeping your carbs low. While you're at it, Try fasting for longer duration if you can. You will see an increase in sugar rise initially, it will plateau (it did in 2nd or 3rd longer fasting session and then slowly started going down for me. My fbg no longer suffers from dawn phenomenon).

Don't give up. You are in right direction

That’s interesting to know. I do fast but 20 hours is about as far as I can tolerate as still working and need to be sharp as well as active, start feeling too hungry at that point and don’t often get break at work to go to loo never mind top up with a drink!! If I’m using my glycogen stores am I also getting rid of any fat that might have accumulated around my liver?

Yes, Once you have used up all the glycogen, body starts burning its fat stores from muscles and liver. Pundits call it ketosis (the good one, not the ketoacidosis we get when our BS shoots up >160mg/dl). It gets triggered for me when I do longer fasting - i.e longer than 36 hours. You can check with blood ketone metre or urine strips.

Easier way to kick start fat burning is to keep glycogen reserves minimal. Low carb diet helps this.
