I visiting my diabetic nurse yesterday for my HbA1c results should was very pleased with my control at 5.7 and has reduced my metformin from 2000 to 1000 a day. What i would like to know is will my blood sugars rise alot by reducing the dose. I have been type 2 for 3 years and lost 2 and a half stone and my HbA1 was 8.8 at first and gained control through lots of walking. Many thanks for any replies.

you probably won't notice it. 1000 is a still a medical dose and I would stay on that for life..a lot of other benefits besides BG
are you eating low carb?

I had mine stopped completely and it made no difference to my readings ... It was cut down from Drs blood test a over 6 months

Yes I am eating low carb and eat to my meter. The nurse has also suggested i stop testing but I will not be taking her advise. I was concerned that my levels will rise after the reduced dose

Well mine certainly didn't as I'd already done all the hard work by losing a ton of weight and eating to a new diet. I'm down to one 1000 tablet from 2 a day and reckon I won't be on it (diabex) at all by December

I was originally on 3x500mg standard metformin a day with meals, and needed to change to the slow release form, which was prescribed as 1000mg (2x500) with my evening meal. I was seeing a big dip in my levels at bedtime and then they stayed slightly higher than previously all the next day then down again at night, so it looked as if the sr metformin wasn't releasing evenly over 24 hours. I was able to change dose to one tablet morning and one evening and this has evened things out for me. Maybe you could investigate taking a morning and evening dose instead of all at once, if you feel you're having any issues?
