Reduction of medication

Hi Folks,
I hope you can help me. I was diagnosed with insulin resistant and I am not sure if I am a diabetic or not. I have been taking Metformin (500mg) twice per day and Glylacide (30mg) twice per day for the past 4 year. My glucose levels remain within the levels of a non diabetic. I spoke with my doctor this week and I asked him if I could start experimenting with this medication see if I could either reduce or come off of it completely and he agreed.

So my question is – has anyone ever done this and if so how successful was it and how did you go about it.

I was on the max dose of both Metformin (3g daily) and Gliclazide (320mg daily) for a long time when I started to come off both Meds.

This decision was taken in conjunction with my Endocrinologist who monitored everything over several months. There was a gradual reduction of both Meds over that time and Bg levels were also monitored. I finally got down to no oral meds after also losing over 5 stone which helped immensely.

This was very successful until I was diagnosed with a Cancer and the drugs decimated my Bg levels.......in other words everything went 'pear shaped.' 6/7 months down the line now getting back to reducing the drugs again.

So it is possible but you need to discuss the whole process with your Doctor. You say he agrees.......has he given you any advice ???

Ken
