Refuse to believe that I could be pre type 2 diabetic.

I haven't been feeling well recently with tummy issue + fatigue so I went to the doctor and he order a few blood tests and a stool test. The blood glucose test came back as low and I had eaten more than enough that day so he has put me on a monitoring machine for 2 weeks 3x a day. Now I thought my results were fine but I was buying something in the pharmacy and thought that I might as well ask them to check if my results are good. Surprisingly enough my fasting results have been high and she said I'm boarderline. It has only been below 5.6 (it was 5.1) once when I was heavy on my period.

My results have been the highest 6.6 in the morning.

I don't exercise but I walk a good amount each day. I eat very healthy. I have a good BMI. I'm young.

Are my results anything to worry about. I'm hating doing these tests so often. I was gonna stop but after finding out my results arent the best Im sticking to it. Could I be pre type 1? I don't know much about diabetes.

I think that worry is too strong a word. You used to have to have two readings of over 7 to be diagnosed as diabetic but, personally, I have little faith in fasting readings due to the liver dumping sugar into the bloodstream if you haven't eaten for a long time.

Although you say you eat healthily there is no such definition and it may be that some small adjustment to your diet would be good for you as it might be for non diabetics.

EDIT: I remember a poster once claiming that he ate healthily but his diet consisted mainly of pizza and cheesecake.

Thank you for the quick response. I eat lots of fruit and veg. I don't eat white bread, white rice or white anything, only brown and whole grain. No oily takeouts.

I was told that fasting is the best time to do the test by the pharmacist. It's what I've read online as well

Usually the fasting result is the lowest of the day but certainly not always. If you are concerned you can ask for a Glucose Tolerance test which will test your response to glucose and show if you have a problem or an Hba1c test which gives a sort of average of blood glucose levels over past 3 months.

I was told I was pre-diabetic with a fasting blood glucose of 6.6mm. Glucose tolerance test confirmed an abnormal response but not diabetic levels. I adopted low carb/higher good fats lifestyle (which has incidentally dropped BMI from 25 (still normal range) to 23.

Morning fasting blood glucose levels however are not the lowest of the day for me. They have varied from about 5.4mm to 6.4mm while before evening meal I can often be as low as 4.5mm. I believe an Hba1c would probably class me as non-daibetic now but a glucose tolerance test would still show up an abnormal response.

If you are glucose intolerant then any carbs are likely to spike your blood sugar. Wholemeal or brown or white makes little difference and a slice of wholemeal toast can spike as much as eating a snickers bar or the like as all carbs turn to sugar in the body.

Ironically, I am one of the people who has a fasting blood glucose reading that is higher than most of the rest of the day.

So really, I am with @Squire Fulwood in that I think the fasting bg test is rather unreliable. It varies so much from day to day, and during the course of each morning.

Having said that, it is the test of choice for most health care professionals, and therefore we are stuck with it.

By the way, as @seadragon says, my blood sugar is affected just as much by brown carbs as by white carbs. It is just that the brown carbs take a little longer to digest enough to release their glucose into the blood.

Your numbers sound good to me. Is there such a thing as Pre Type 1 ? Type 1 tends to develop quite quickly and can strike at any age. Try eating a sticky toffee pudding with custard or something like that; then test two hours after eating to see what result you get.

Type 1 doesn't always develop quickly. I had symptoms for quite a while prior to diagnosis (to be honest months and months) but when I did my fasting bgl was 23. I put most of my symptoms down to stress initially. I was on the verge of dka when I went to the hospital 2 days later. Had I waited longer to see another GP things would have gotten a lot worse very quickly.

A lot of people also talk about LADA which comes on slowly and is often misdiagnosed as type 2. I think if I had been tested correctly when my symptoms first appeared (my GP ignored my concerns so I figured eh stress) I may have been able to keep the honeymoon period for longer. So I guess there is no pre type 1 but people may be able to enjoy the honeymoon period for longer if it's caught early and treated appropriately.

@RuffsTheShake I didn't say diabetes always develops quickly. You had symptoms that you attempted to ride out without success, but when you sought medical help treatment rapidly ensued before debilitating DKA took hold. Some people try to endure the symptoms of DKA before seeking help. Some even leave it until it is too late.

@xGreenx has sought early diagnosis of her symptoms.

Thank your for your responses. I lost a reply I was writing but my fasting blood sugar was 7.3 one day. My doctor wants to follow up with me so I am going to make an appointment soon. I just hope that I can forget about this all and that it isn't something long term.
