Regular moderate exercise log

Hi @Snapsy . Do you think there'll be more pressure for your *event* run? I'm sure the competitor in you will come to the fore.
Sounds like it'll be great fun. Are you fundraising?

As for me, recently started back on my heavy weight programme. Gave muscles a rest for a few weeks and focused on cardio/ intensity training stuff.
Due to a badly injured knee playing rugby in my teens, squats can be problematic and I have to be cautious. So in my wisdom decided to perform some dumbbell lunges. Felt great doing them yesterday BUT sitting comfortably today has been an issue. It's a nice ache/ pain that reminds me i did something worthwhile.
:arghh::arghh::arghh::arghh::arghh:
:):):):)

Dumbbell lunges? Sounds pretty heavy going! Well done - although bad luck with the uncomfortable sitting!

Not fundraising (apart from the entry fee, raising money for a local cause) - saving that for my first longer race, perhaps. This 5k is a 'let's see how this goes' kind of thing......

:)

I have been going to the gym more lately to getreadu for wrestling season, been doing push-ups and leg workouts

Totalled 100 lengths this last week - 20 per day - and I finished off the week with a 31.37 parkrun this morning followed by over two hours of heavy duty cleaning and reorganising with friends.

Stuffed my face with the world's biggest black-pudding-and-ham omelette for lunch, washed down with a large glass of Pinot noir.

Slept off all of the above for a couple of hours on the sofa this afternoon. Brilliant day!

:)

After 18 weeks of pure strength based workouts i had the first day of my mixed workout which i'll be doing for the next 20 weeks. Today was hypertrophy day (higher reps than i'm used to now) and i'm always amazed as to how frickin' painful it is to do high reps again.

Is it that pain that in a strange way feels satisfyingly good?
You know you're earned it!!!!!!!!!
What constitutes high reps if you don't mind me asking?

A 6.5km bike ride to a pub, a pint of local ale, some ham and eggs, a small glass of Merlot, a huge plate of cheese, a listen to some live jazz and a 3.5km bike ride (on byways, not on the road!) home.

Good Sunday exercise!

:)

As a powerlifter everything above 6 reps is hardcore cardio :D

Nah, 8-10 reps i consider high in relation to the intensity, my strength drops drastically after 6 reps which is the highest i've been doing for the last 18 weeks on compound lifts. Right now 8 reps on the bench press feels like a marathon.

@qe5rt . That's really interesting. Along similar lines I train 5×5 sets heavy on strictly compounds. I usually stick with it for 8/10 weeks then change. On occasion I've decided to drop the weights and up the reps as a new routine I find that I really feel it around 8 reps and really have to work hard to get to 12 reps.
Always amazes me how our bodies adapt to what we ask of them.

5x5 is a great routine i used to do it a lot. I hardly ever go above 10 unless it's abs or forearms and indeed, it always amazes me too how hard just 2 more reps can be with mediocre weight, i've been doing 6 reps with 25 kg more but for some reason those extra 2 reps take a lot out of me.

Second day of mixed routine (it's called DUP or daily undulating periodization for those who care), power workout and added abs and forearms. Wanted to take the bike to work today but they started work on my driveway and i had to make sure my car was out of the way during the day so took the car instead. Still pretty sore from monday especially in the lats.

20 lengths this morning - good to be back in the pool. Have felt really under the weather so hadn't swum this week until this morning. The sore throat is less sore, and I'm feeling okayish, so off I went.

Glad I did! Mind you, it was as much effort to de-ice the car as it was to swim - does that count as moderate exercise?!

:)

After 51 years of resisting, I have succumbed to a hat. Well, a £3.00 cheap and cheerful fleece type of hat from the local supermarket. If I'm going to be walking more in the cold and dark, I need to be warm!

1800 miles now completed. Looks good now for getting to 2000 miles by January 5th as I've done 240/250 or so in the last couple of months. The extra walking at work is helping..

De-icing cars is definitely strenuous exercise, I reckon

Morning folks! Because it's December I have upped my maximum exercise target - instead of 12-20 lengths 3-5 times a week, I'm aiming for 24-30 lengths 3-5 times a week, and I'm 'allowing' myself up to two runs per week instead of one. I'd been at 'maximum' target of 20 lengths per day for pretty much all of November, so I'd been working on my speed and my swimming style rather than upping my lengths, so I hadn't thought that going from 20 to 24 lengths would be that much of a 'thing'.

But it is!!! Still, I managed 25 on Thursday, and 24 on Friday, yesterday and today.

And LOOK what I did on SUNDAY!!!!!!!!!! I'm SO proud. This is my 'sprint finish' - and you can see my pump, because I was using the pump belt to carry the Santa hat which was such a pain in the a*** to run in, and it got a bit tangled up. Did I care? NO! And I've got a MEDAL! Okay, so it was a local 5k/10k (I just did the one loop, so 5k), but it was my first 'event' run, and I absolutely loved it. As you can probably tell from the picture....

Wow! I do parkrun frequently, yet to get back at 'events' And you only took off your hat? I couldnt run in all that, still in shorts and singlet!

Hi @walnut_face - the big bobble on the hat nearly killed me, so I had to take the hat off! There were full-on Santa-suited gangs of runners there, and I was overtaken by a very warm-looking girl in a knitted Fairisle onesie.

I was quite warm by the time I got to the finish! I prefer to run in shorts and a vest, but as it was thick frost on the ground, and the course was mostly out of the sun (in woodland - it was gorgeous) it was definitely a day for running tights. Wish I'd lost the long sleeves part-way round, but it's not really convenient to undress during the course of a run.

One day soon I'll get the balance right! I think the right way next time would be to turn up in trackies and a fleece, warm up, quickly lose the trackies and fleece to reveal vest and shorts, and fling the extra clothes at my kit man. More often than not at parkrun I end up wishing I'd worn fewer clothes by the time I've got halfway round.......

Still, am only getting started so all of this is a really useful learning curve!

:)

I'd set the pic above as my avatar earlier - and now it scares me every time I come on here, so I've replaced it with a cup of tea instead. I feel better now!

24 lengths this morning, 2hrs vigorous polishing this afternoon.

The former energised me for the day ahead.
The latter has finished me off.....!

:dead:

I finished my November challenge of 15,000 steps of which 7,000 were to be aerobic steps (as per my pedometer - brisk continuous walking for at least 10 minutes before it records steps as aerobic) minimum every day with 20,000 steps at least once a week with only 2 days where I didn't hit targets. One I only just missed, and one was a day when I was just feeling pathetic and didn't make it out of the door all day!!

Interestingly, my body seems to want to keep going with this level of activity. I eased up for a couple of days as it was icy early mornings so got the bus to work and my students all complained I was hyper-active until at least lunch time and demanded I went back to walking to work!

So, I've adjusted my exercise spreadsheet to show how often I'm managing this still! Also noting my fasting test is finally, finally coming down (combination of real strictness about carbs pre Hba1c and this 6 - 7 miles walking every single day with at least 3 miles of it being brisk and continuous).
