Regular moderate exercise log

Hi @ElyDave and @RuthW I reduced by 50% that time, will have to play around I suppose. Really wasn't expecting it with weights as usually it's aerobic stuff I have to keep an eye on.
Anyway, swam yesterday and that was fine. Today I am clearing out the kitchen for a new kitchen this week. Goodness knows what we'll eat...

you mean, weights this morning, BG before 7.0, after 7.1 no carbs, no basal adjustments. Breakfast this morning was espresso with a good dose of double cream, so caffeine elevated BG
 
Walked about 4 miles and think that seems to be working for me. Will aim at that.

Not sure what happened there ... normally I get notifications of posts to any threads I'm following in my email inbox and there's been nothing from here for ages! Strange.

I'm literally plodding on with walking - and have the aches and pains to prove it!

But yesterday evening, with my aching legs up, I was thinking there's really not much advice around for the ageing and unfit who're doing more exercise than they've been used to! The 'advice for diabetics' I've been given so far is just to do more exercise. Given I was doing nothing, starting going for daily walks seemed feasible, but I regularly have one or two days in the week when it just doesn't work out. I get stuck into things at home which don't demand I leave the flat. It's made me aware that walks need to meet two criteria for me. There has to be a purpose to them (e.g. doing necessary shopping) or they have to be somewhere that's really nice to be spending time in. Or I just don't go out and walk. Hmm.

Around 3, sometimes 4 days of the week I plan one of the 'nice' walks and do 4 to 5 miles. On a couple of days I do shorter, functional walks. I'm not averaging the 10,000 steps a day which I've been aiming for. I'm averaging between 8,000 and 9,000. That's not bad - masses more than I was doing - but I'm realising I need a different strategy to get the overall level of activity up.

This is at least as hard as the dietary changes!
 
I think 1 or 2 days a week where it doesn't work out is OK. The 5 or 6 days count for a lot. That 2 days happens to me too. What propels me out again is that my average daily blood sugar starts to slide upwards, and this log! I sometimes check my last entry to see if it's 2 days or more away.

When I'm at home I do find it useful to have my exercise bike. I feel (I can't prove it) that half an hour on that is as hard as 90 minutes walking (I prefer being out, though). So far I haven't put it in front of the TV, but I might! It does for Day 3 of not managing to get out for me. If you have room for something like that, maybe you could get one.

Right now I am at my son's place, so we're planning a weights session this afternoon.

Yesterday I did a 90 minute trek to the butcher and green grocer and back. Gave myself extra points for dragging a heavy shopping trolley on the way back (slight hypo ensued!)

Sunday, four circuits of the local park.
 
Last week I really went for it with the walking and managed to get an average of 15k a day (mainly because I had two 23k days of long walks up on the hills). Unfortunately I'm in the office three days this week and I can just about manage to get to 10k if I walk at lunchtime as well. I've invested in some waterproof trousers (my first size 12 in at least 20 years!) and once I shorten them, I'm hoping I'll be more able to get out in the horrible weather. I'm seeing my GP on Thursday to talk hormones but I'm hoping she will agree with me going back to the gym if my blood pressure is down. I had to ask my builder to open a jar of olives yesterday (the shame!)

I'd love to be able to walk an average of 15k a day but I'm not sure I often did that even when I was younger. I'd have thought a walk of half that distance was long. I come from a family of serious walkers and was the one who liked it least! I'm surprised that later in life, doing it on my own it feels very different - and I do mostly enjoy it.
 
Yes, 15k is a hike, not a walk! Do you have T1 or T2, or another variant, Annie?

Anyway, today I finally started the weight training/lifting I've been talking about for months. It was quite enjoyable. Now, I'll see how much I ache the day after tomorrow.....

Well done you lot on the moving around. Kitchen emptying did nothing for my levels I really thought moving all that stuff would. Just 30 to 40 min walks other days this week.
Annieok is that 15K in one go or all day? I don't fitness track anymore but when I did 15K a day was fairly average. 15K in one go most impressive! Great news on the smaller trousers :-)

Walked about 4 miles yesterday and 5 today so happy with that and am not so exhausted.
 
Sorry - I meant 15k (15,000) steps, not 15 kms! I have type 2, recently diagnosed. I walk about 8 to 10 kms probably most days. This week between work and dark evenings it's been more like 8 kms.

How do you fit in an average of 15,000 steps a day - what's your routine?

I'm aiming for 10,00 and am averaging around 8,500 at present (i.e. I've a way to go yet). There are days when I do over 10,000, such as yesterday, but the average is held down by it not being a daily walk of any great distance yet. My life hasn't been planned around this much walking!

Oh, embarrassment looms! I did deadlifts with 45kg, and squats with just one 12kg dumbbell(that was too easy, I want to try barbell squats next time), and lateral raises with weights so light I refuse to mention, especially because my left and right arm proved to be completely different in strength! And military presses with, I think, a mere, 20kg. All the walking has been good for my legs, but my feeble little upper body needs a lot if work!

Anyway, I haven't done anything with weights since I was in sixth form - so that's 35 years ago. And it was enjoyable.

I am planning to try the program by the guy on 'muscle for life' website. He wrote a book called Bigger, Leaner, Stronger for men (and another called Thinner, Leaner, Stronger for women, FGS!) and it looks effective. The program has you lift as heavy as you can, and increase the weight immediately as soon as you can lift it easily. So, I'm trying it. I'll let you know how it goes. :)

LOL. I was imagining you were actually on a hiking holiday. But 15,000 steps is excellent. I'm sure I've never done that.
 
Oh yes, and I'm already aching today. Still, I walked a few miles to Whole Foods to get healthier supplies for the son's cupboards.
 
I did 10 kms yesterday (15,000 steps) according to my fitbit. I've got my Diabetic Nurse appointment this morning followed by my GP appointment in a different clinic a mile away so will get some added walking in!
