I saw a different DN at my last appointment and mentioned that I have become concerned about the amount of weight that I have lost which, though small, is too much for my liking by half of a stone. She suggested that I could try reintroducing a small quantity of carbs to maintain my weight and said I might try one piece of toasted white bread per week to start with.
The first question I have is whether one slice of white bread per week would be enough? The other question is that I really do not like the idea of eating a carb that comes with so few extras in terms of nutrition so wouldn't a starchy carb like carrot or swede be better, coming as they do with a few more nutrients than stodgy white bread?
I do not wish to sacrifice my bg in favour of weight management but the balancing act between the two has me flummoxed. Tia.

good grief - she actually recommended eating white bread????? the woman is dangerous!!!!

i certainly agree with the idea of swede, or carrot, or sweet potato or similar. If you desperately want bread, wholemeal is better than white.

Have you gone down the path of increasing protein fats, and thereby meal sizes (eggs, cheese, yogurt, certain meats etc) That's how I managed to stop losing, gain a small amount to bring me up to where I wanted to be, then maintain? It worked for me, but it did take a while to find the right balance (a couple of months in all). I had to start weighing and measuring my additional foods and tweaking the amounts until I found the balance. (although I didn't count calories etc). It was harder than losing it all! I used my food scales, my weight scales and my meter and kept daily records, meal by meal. I didn't add back any carbs at all. In fact, when I really analysed my BS stats I cut down the carbs even more.

White bread? Good grief ... and one slice a week? What good is that going to do. I am laughing out loud here!

I don't particularly want bread of any kind, I do not want to slide back into the habit of having bread as just a 'filler'. I must admit to having missed garden peas with my roast, though.

Try the garden peas. They are my staple. My meter tells me they are OK. As it happens, carrots are OK for me, also in smaller quantities and not on the same plate as peas.

I have resisted weighing foods as I know I would become obsessed and besides, it mostly falls to my family to serve up meals as from a sitting position trying to handle hot pots and pans just isn't safe. As to extra protein, will I not be putting strain on my kidneys to increase it?

Forget the white bread - anything like that could start cravings and hunger.

How about eating extra cheese or berries with double cream. If you want more carbs then have something healthy..... more veg with butter on or nuts.

Hmm it seems odd that they suggested a slice of WHITE
At my first ever appt the dn suggested wholemeal bread and sweet potatoes so maybe not so strange I suppose.

No problem having extra cheese! I would have a bath in the stuff if I could.

You don't need to weigh cheese or eggs, or even carrots or peas. You can count most things. A serving spoon of peas, 3 carrots, 2 carrots, 6 dice shaped pieces of cheese etc. Extra protein is only bad if you already have kidney damage. I eat far more than the levels recommended, which are normally the minimum levels rather than the maximum. I am a great believer in protein, especially as I age.

I'm glad you said that, I imagined a desert spoonful of peas! Looks like a full roast without the spuds for me then! Thanks, lass.
