I now feel much more motivated to lose weight since watching the diabetes epidemic: tonight on itv. after I went through the worst week of my life with falling into a hypoglycaemic coma on May 23rd. I know that not everyone is going to like it on here, but I am ditching low carb diets and pursuing a low fat diet suggested to me by my GP, Diabetic Nurse, my parents as well as I am back living with them (they even recorded the programme on itv for me and them to watch). I now also attend a diabetic support group which has been very supportive and had some really good recipes for low fat and low calorie meals. Tomorrow is my 3rd meeting with the support group and tomorrow's topic of discussion is which diet is more healthy for you; Low carb or Low fat.

I think that tonight's show was an eye-opener for me and for my parents as my dad now has prediabetes, but one let down of the show was that all of the attention was on Type 2 and I still can't believe they nicknamed it The Silent Killer. It was informative though and my parents suggested the idea that I should try the Newcastle Diet.

Yes I watched that, a very good program, I hope all goes well with your renewed motivation. Sometimes it is so hard. But when you look at the facts put down there is only one choice, and that is to start looking after yourself. I don't like the alternatives.

Well done I am glad you have found the motivation now. It's good that you have a support group to go to because they will help you to stay motivated. You seem to have come a long way since your original post and it's great that you have a plan now. It would be good if you could give us updates sometimes on how you are doing.

Hi. I hope your diet delivers the right weight and blood sugar levels for you. I personally don't agree with the nurse's diet advice but each to their own. For diabetics it's the carbs not the fats that affect blood sugar which is why I keep the carbs down....

good luck! glad you found a path your happy with

I am so pleased, and somewhat relieved, that you have started to take control of your diabetes. Also that you have started to post on here again. I, and I suspect many others on here, have been wondering how you are getting on. I was worried when you had left home, but were seeming close to being homeless.

Now, I make no apologies for giving the following advice, which you, as an adult, can chose to follow or ignore.
First of all, 'own' your diabetes. I.e., find out as much as you can, and make informed choices about what you do to get control of your diet, your health and your life. I remember reading one of your posts which mentioned you were a university student, so you obviously have the intelligence and literacy skills to be able to do that. If you are still at university get support from student services, e.g. Counselling, and finding somewhere to live if you want to be independent of your parents.

Relationship with parents: Sorry, but your previous posts have sometimes suggested parents and others bully you. Are they really that bad? Most parents want the best for their kids, and perhaps they are in despair at seeing you ill through diabetes and your apparent lack of incentive to control it rather than it control you. It is possible you are also deptessed. Tell your doctor if you think you are.

You do have quite a challenge, from previous posts you have a lot of weight to lose, and probably, justifiably feel you are in a hopeless position. So set yourself small targets for improvement rather than looking for a quick solution to the bigger problem.

Support group is good, get all the information you need then YOU decide what is the best manageable way for your personal circumstances. If possible start to exercise, there are many GP prescribed exercise courses nationally, and it needn't be expensive. Look out for commercially marketed low fat food which often have added sugar.

A request. Please do not disappear from the forum. There is some excellent advice on here from people who have similar difficulties and are solving them through sharing advice, encouragement and support. I know that I am interested to hear how you are getting on and I am sure others are too. Please update regularly.

Congratulations on making a start on sorting out your health. You are young, and I hope you have a long healthy and happy life ahead of you.

Best wishes to you
Pipp

Pleased you are feeling so motivated to get your diabetes under control and that you have good support I know a lot on here do not agree with low fat but if it works for you that is all that matters

Low fat is fine. Just be careful any food you eat does not substitute sugar for the fat.

akindrat18 are you on medication? Might I suggest you find an activity that you like and do it every day. There are people on the forum who fit activities into their lifestyle in very imaginative ways, its finding away that works for you.
I reduced my carb intake to max 150gms and it has made a massive difference to me . That said diabetes is such an individual condition , best advice I would give is to test you blood sugar and see hiw different foods effect you as an individual.
Keep posting and keep reading . Good luck .

Yes akindrat18.
I suggest you have a look at the thread Jamrox started, 'a new you in 42'. Lots of ideas on how to include exercise in a daily routine. Lots of support and encouragement too. Jamrox really deserves a prize for this.

I only started it Pipp , its all of you that have made it a success and inspire me every day. I love the innovative ways that people fit 30 minutes activity into their lives , some great ideas and some very funny people who make me laugh.

It is such a success, though Jamrox. All from your idea, which has gained momentum thanks to the humour, support and commitment of everyone.
I laugh a lot through the posts on that thread, but more importantly I am exercising more. I knew it was imminent that I would be starting again, but the impetus was your thread.

Was it you who suggested get your fix in 56? ...

No, think that was peacetrain. Cannot claim credit for someone else being creative.

Then someone else said 'do some more in 64' with the suggestion that the '6' could be replaced with whatever number we chose to. Genius.

But it looks like we could be going off topic here. Sorry, akindrat18. I do recommend thread 'a new you in 42' though.

Everything for me is looking bright and clear. I have started taking xencial from today, my gp has reduced my dose of gliclazide to one a day, On Monday I will be getting a phone call from my personal fitness motivator for the first time and hopefully will meet with him or her later in the week. I now have a online job, a part time job, a volunteer job, two interviews next week for intern jobs and also taking a free online training course.

I have been reducing my intake of diet coke by having fresh & ice-cold cucumber water. I've also started taking part in the 30 Day Ab Challenge on Facebook with my parents and tonight I had a contest with my dad where we had to straighten our arms, level them to the shoulders and see who will drop their arms first. My parents still eat sugary foods, but since my mum got made redundant the family has been having homemade Spag Bol, Chicken Casserole, Bacon and Cheese Oatcakes, a Fry Up and tonight Steak with peas, mushrooms, onions, tomatos and chips.

I don't feel depressed anymore and I think that I need my parents more as my gp looked through my previous hba1c's and found that my lowest reading was this time last year when I was with my parents after my 1st year at uni as it was 5.8, she also said that I should consider staying with my parents when I go back to uni as my blood sugars increase when I'm away from my parent managing it on my own.

The support group that I have been too has bee an amazing experience for me and wouldn't have heard about if it wasn't for a friend of my dad's who told me about it as my dad's friend has been diabetic for 15 years and is diet controlled with a low fat diet and has lost 15 stone which is what I am hoping to get rid of.

Great stuff akindrat18.

You sound so much more positive. Well done on all you have achieved.
Losing weight is so difficult, and you have made the first steps. It won't be easy, I know. I have been struggling to do that for ages myself. I am older than you, but have managed to lose about half of the weight I need to. It has made such a difference to my health, with diabetes in remission. I hope you carry on feeling as positive as you do now. Also that you go on to achieve all you want to and more.

Good luck with the interviews. Keep posting here regardless of whether you feel good or bad. You will find a lot of support.

Pipp

By the way, I have had xenical prescribed in the past. Be very careful about the amount of fat you eat when you are on this. Otherwise you will have very embarrassing toilet mishaps. Don't be put off though, as it helps with the weight loss.

Hey akindrat18 I am seriously impressed with all you are doing! The reducing diet coke bit really struck a chord with me because that was something I have struggled with for years. You have taught me something new too, I'll try the ice cold cucumber water myself - thanks for the tip. Can't wait to hear more from you and I'm looking forward to congratulating you when you have reached your target weight.

I am huge diet coke drinker zand, my family all drink coke and they used to get through a 1.75 litre bottle within a night, but now they get through the bottle in 4 days. A 1.75 litre bottle of diet coke citrus zest lasts me over a week. The cucumber water has been lovely to drink and I do a jug of it the night before and place it in the fridge so that it is nice and cool. I have had one little downside this week which is that I now I have to buy 5XL shorts and size 50 inch waist trousers.

You are an inspiration , heres me prattling on about loosing the last couple of pounds to reach 2stone loss.
I hope you will get as much help and support as I have on here , it has really helped me to stick with it.
The people on here are all amazing and will give you advice when the going gets tough , I get up and move when the adverts are on or walk around the sitting room sometimes when watching tv , its the little things that all add up.
I walk to the local shop etc.

Top tip is if your clothes are to big throw them away , that feels great.
Move a bit more.

I eat a lot of salad now and have it with coronation chicken sandwich filler , I love it and pretend Im having a curry
