Repeating keto, and a question

Hello, I am a 44y old male. I did a keto diet (Pronokal) years ago, and it worked pretty well: I lost about 25kg, 15kg of which the first month. I kept my weight for a few years, so no yo-yo on the short term. I was cooking myself. But then my lifestyle changed, and I have regained the weight.

Now I am starting a keto diet with a doctor, with a different brand (Theroscience), but quite similar to Pronokal. My doctor seems to know this kind of diets pretty well (he has recommended me magnesium, sodium, potassium ... and a good blood test).

She said to me that the second time a person tries a keto diet, the results are not as good as the first one. For example, she tells me that instead of losing 15kg the first month, maybe I will lose 8 or 9kg.

Is this correct? I have never seen this lack of efficiency due to repeated use before, written anywhere. But it seems she knows a lot about the subject.

Looking forward to learn here, and especially to learn what to do after the diet finishes (exit strategy).

@Arbre welcome to the forum!

It would help members to help you if you completed your profile to let us know what type of diabetes you have and whether you are taking any blood glucose lowering medication.

As someone who has successfully used a ketogenic way of eating to control my diabetes (details in signature) and lose weight, I am puzzled as to why you feel the need to use a ‘brand’ to follow a keto way of eating?

For me, ketogenic eating is very simple - real, unprocessed food which eliminates high carbohydrate food, replacing carbs with fats as an alternative energy source.

I use the term ‘way of eating’ rather than ‘diet’ as for me this is about a lifestyle change: finding a way to meet my health goals in a way that I enjoy and can sustain rather than a short term ‘fix’.

Thank you for your comment, Goonergal.

I am not diabetic. I was doubting whether to join this forum or not, but I have seen that several non-diabetics contribute here. I hope my decision is a reasonable one.

I agree with your comment on "brands". This second time I wanted to avoid to go to Pronokal, for this reason I chose a doctor specialized on keto diets. But it seems she likes this new brand, at least at the beginning of the diet. Later, she says I will start eating "normal" food. For me it makes sense, because I remember that what helped me a lot with the Pronokal diet was the immediate success out of it: losing kilos and kilos on almost a daily basis, at least at the beginning.

When I lose more weight, for sure I want to switch towards a healthy diet, which for me it is obvious now, it focuses on avoiding sugars.

I want to learn more from keto diets, and understand which is the right proportion between fat and protein. Before, I thought a keto diet was mostly a high protein one (related to paleo). Later, I learned that in fact keto diets are relatively low on protein. But I still need to find out my way, when I stabilize in weight ...

Hi Arbre,

This place isn't exactly meant for you... There's a lot of different types of diabetes, so you might have seen people who are LADA, Mody, health care professionals, prediabetics (who are kindof diabetic but not yet in the range to get severe complications, but headed there), T3c's, gestational diabetics, people who haven't been diagnosed as a particular type yet, and whatnot, besides T1's and T2's... Which might explain why you thought there were a bunch of non-diabetics on here. Oh, we also get folks who haven't been diagnosed yet and have questions about a possible pending diagnosis or symptoms.

That said... There's a LOT of places online where you can follow keto advice. But as you're here now, might as well get into it. As @Goonergal stated, brands really are nonsense... Just go with the proper keto diet as it was intended: 20 grams or less of carbs a day, moderate carbs, high fats. The keto diet app will help you figure out what your ratio's should be. You'll find loads of recipies over on www.dietdoctor.com (you can sign up, but they have so much free stuff you don't really have to), and there's masses of people on Facebook groups and cooks on Instagram. Pronokal, by the way, is a protein based diet, not a keto diet and I can't find the other diet you mentioned anywhere... But really... Stick with real food. Read Dr. Jason Fung's The Obesity Code, which is very useful, maybe check Dr. Eric Berg's youtube video's... It'll help. I have a little quick-start-guide aimed at T2's, but it'd work for basic weight loss as well. Maybe it's useful. https://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/blog-entry/the-nutritional-thingy.2330/

In any case, I hope this helps. There's cheaper ways to follow keto than to go for some brand or other. ;)

Good luck!
Jo

Just what are you eating if it’s not “normal” food? is it ready made meals or some shakes and bars thing usually used a as very low calorie (not keto) thing

I have no idea what a keto “brand” is never having heard of such. To me it’s real food that’s not processed, it’s low carb and higher fats.

Hi @Arbre

Can I suggest that you change the status in your profile to show that you don’t have diabetes? That will prevent you being asked over and again.

Since this is a support forum for people with diabetes, you may not find the support to be exactly what you are looking for. You might find this more general ketogenic site of interest: https://www.ketogenicforums.com/
