Hi all

I've noticed since low carbing (c30-45g a day) that weight training is quite a bit more challenging. Is this normal?

Have you any tips to share that will give me a boost?!

Thanks

Diagnosed prediabetic Easter 2014. Just left to get on with it, no guidance or help from GP. Every day I'm learning something new.

I weight train and have quite a lot of carbs to give me the energy but some seem to think fat can do the same (Me - No). I have probably (50-100g) before i start 1-2hr muscle / circuit / boxercise)

Try a lean mass protein powder which is high carb content.

i did resistance training whilst low carbing, it was hard but i never did it before low carbing so have nothing to compare it lol sorry

Thanks. Do you know any brands I can search for?

:) it's definitely harder without immediate glucose stores!

There's a thread somewhere in the exercise section where (I think) @borofergie and @ElyDave discuss exercise and long distance running on low carb. If I remember correctly, the trick while low carbing is to go slow and steady - not fast and furious. Apparently, if you judge it right, when running, a low carber never hits 'the wall'.

I guess that there would be a similarly different technique for low carb resistance training...

Ok thanks I'll go hunt.

There's no fear of any hardcore cardio from me right now with this dodgy leg of mine! I used to be partial to a good spinning session though and am missing that :(

Maybe not fast but certain furious! That's an amazing feat. I used to have an ambition to do the marathon but got shin splints and that was the end of my running career :(

The majority of the brands are very similar in contents; some very high in carbs especialy if they are energy / mass gainers, just check the ingredients and %contents . Matrix nutrition, maximuscle etc. I often get them off eBay as the are a 1/4 of the price as from many high street shops.

Use some of the drug names i mentioned in a search and read the stats / info for them.

Regards

Holland and Barrett do a natural hemp protein powder. No added sugar at all. Or flavours or whey, or any of the other stuff they shove into these powders.

I wanted the protein, but don't want to go anywhere near whey, so it was an obvious choice.

Tastes lovely - sort of earthy and green. I used it for a while to add to yogurt (with cocoa and stevia:hungry:) but I have never tried weight training on it - mainly because I have never tried weight training. ;)

I saw some soya stuff in there. Just shocked at the price!

I think I will try it for baking...

X

A self experiment by a very geeky research medic - his take on what removing carbs does to his exercise capacity.

How long have you been low carbing? It can take few weeks for your body to build up additional enzymes to switch over to a primarily fat burning mechanism instead of relying on glycogen stores - while you are adapting you may feel some performance reduction.

Yeah the shop prices can be extortionate but thats on the high street. Try online.

Many are whey proteins and soya additives.

Trivia rather than canderal?

Trivia tastes strange to me, a bit sourish :meh:

Thanks!

I've been low carbing for about five mins ;) ok about three weeks properly so it could just be early days...
