Went to see new doctor on Friday to get results of previous weeks blood test.Good news (apparently ) is that my HBA1C is now 11.9 compared to 12.5 before, not that good news I thought
although he has referred me to Diabetic specialist at hospital.Took BP 150/80 and didn't mention cholesterol levels (maybe I wasn't listening anyway).Told me I was dehydrated(I had nothing for 14 hours before giving blood).Daily finger tests are still running around 18-20 in morning,12-14 in evening.I'm still on low carbs ,no weight loss though..
Given these numbers how long would anyone advise I wait before I start chasing GP/Specialist for appointment as I think I need to get sorted out sooner rather than later,(although having rung Diabetes Careline they thought my numbers were high but not high enough to be overly concerned!!).
Having spent time reading Carefix's post regarding EFA's etc I found his ideas very interesting and do seem to relate to other eminent and forward thinking people I have oreviously spoken to in the field of Thyroid/Adrenal therapy.

Thanks to everyone for the invaluable advice on this forum.

hi stockcar19,
I'm afraid your numbers aren't fantanstic.
your hba1c needs to start heading down closer to 6.5 - 7 if possible.

Get on to you're GP as soon as you can for the right meds.

Exercise is also very important in the fight against high BG and will
also help if you're "not as skinny as the rest".

all the best,
timo.

Well it's may be not so great.Went to GP surgery last week to see nurse and told her that new doctor had referred me to hospital but nothing on screen about it.Having heard nothing I have just phoned hospital who have no record yet of a referral letter, rang surgery and told that letter was only sent on 23/05/08 (after I had been to see nurse). When she took my BS ON 22/05/08 IT WAS 26.9.They have now put me on Gliclazide until I get an appointment which could be a month - end June.Surely this is not satisfactory treatment when running such high numbers.
I'm getting really depressed by the whole situation now- can any body suggest my next move whether it be NHS or private in the SE Area . I can't keep on like this and don't know where/who to turn to.

Pete

Pete,
Whereabouts are you in SE area?

Your results & treatment are quite unacceptable. You could try NHS direct, but I also recommend local help. You chemist may also be able to advise.

I suggest you contact your local Diabetes support group:

Enquires please contact:
Tom Baterip, Chairman on Tel: 020 8689 9134

Pete,
If you are prepared to go private, I can certainly recommend Dr Mike Baxter who is based at the Runneymead Hospital in Chertsey. His fees are £125 for a half hour consultation. If you have private health cover he is on AXA PPP, NU Healthcare and BUPA approved lists.

An alternative would be Prof David Russell-Jones who is director of the new CEDAR Centre (Centre for Endocrinology and Diabetes Research) in Guildford. He also has a private diabetes clinic at The Guildford Nuffield Hospital, but I don't know what his charges are.

We are quite fortunate in having two specialists who are recognised as the country's leading diabetologists right on our doorstep.

PS I am Cranleigh-based.

Hi Dennis and Ian

Thank you for your replies

Ian - I have spoken to Tom who runs my local Diabetes Support Group and had a long conversation with him about Diabetes care in our area and got some really useful ideas from him. Also got details of their next meeting.

Dennis - Thanks very much for the info regarding the specialists. If my referral is not forthcoming I think I will make an appointment to see one of them, it may even be worth a consultation for a second opinion anyway - better increase limit on credit card though !! Thanks again Dennis, you really are a mine of information and I'm sure you are appreciated by everyone on the forum for the time, help and inspiration you give to us.

Regards
Pete
