People, who do not stick by you in good times and bad.
Hi All,

Just a quick question, I was at the doctors today. (My doctor is very supportive) and he gave me my HbA1c and other results.
This is my 3 monthly first time results. I'm not sure what to do. I have been on the LCHF diet for about the same time maybe slightly less.
My initial result for the HbA1c was 59 and today I was told it had went down to 46 I'm pretty happy about that.
My cholesterol has went up from 5.6 to 10.7 my hdl was 0.86 down to 0.83 my triglycerides went fro. 2.6 to 4.6.
I have lost about a stone in weight and find the LCHF diet pretty manageable.
My doctor was lost for answers and has told me to come back on Tuesday for a fasting blood test.
Cam anybody help me with the bad readings for my cholesterol. My doctor has advised me to come of the diet and just eat sensibly and healthy. I'm just slightly over weight and just had nerve block injections so find exercise difficult. I do try to exercise and have also ripped the stomach muscle from top to bottom while trying situps.

Thanks everybody.

First, the NHS view of cholesterol is pretty arbitrary and many people on here disagree with the way it's measured and how it's interpreted.
There is a view that a non-fasting reading is of no use anyway, so wait and see what your fasting test reveals.
Second, well done on your HbA1c and weight loss.
Third, sorry to hear you were over-zealous with the situps. At least you tried.
Fourth, try not to worry and others here will have more advice.

I'd also wait & see the results of the fasting test before I got too worried. Another thing to keep in mind is that peoples cholesterol can go a bit haywire when they are actively losing weight so it could just be that.

Some suggest that you avoid booze & high fat food the night before a fasting cholesterol test too in order to get a more accurate view.

Good luck & let us know how you get on :)

When I got the result of my first 3 month test after diagnosis, I asked the doctor for my cholesterol results and she hadn't asked the lab to give this. I was 4.7 when tested 3 months previously and this might have gone up as I am eating more fats with the LCHF diet. I am on statins anyway, so I'm not going to worry about the cholesterol. Reducing the BS level is more important and you have done really well with that and the weight loss.

Thanks guys, it was a wonderful lady on here that got me thru the first couple of months with advice.
She also said about the high cholesterol and not to worry to much as it's the good cholesterol that matters, but the doctor said that they refused to give him the good cholesterol results (so that got me panicking) lol why would that be?
I don't drink and have not in 6-7 years.
Prem51 I don't really want to go on the statins, as they seem.to cause a lot of problems for some. I've got enough wrong with me at the moment anyway. Haha
Cheers safi for the encouragement.
Cheers guys.

Hi @purp ,
Meant to get back to you earlier, sorry, have to say it took a good 6months for my Cholesterol numbers to settle and show improvement as did my Hub's so no reason at this point to panic, just keep on doing what's working for you, then after your next bloods we can see about tweeking things for you. Take care.......:happy:

Hey Satindoll,

Great to hear from you.

Oooo hells bells I'm getting all confused here. This is what happened.
I got my bloods taken after the last time we spoke and the reading were.
Total cholesterol 5.6 up to10.7
HbA1c 59 down to 46
Hdl 0.86 down to 0.83
LDL 3.6 no result
Triglyceride 2.6 up to 4.6 then doctor said this is far to high cholesterol stop diet. Spoke to Dr Yung he said maybe fast or maybe to much protein.
Then after this my doc said let's try a fasting blood test so no food from 7pm till 10.30am next day. Readings where as follows
HbA1c 46
Cholesterol 6.1
HDL 1.1
LDL 5.0
Triglycerides 1.8

Satindoll I'm getting all confused with what's happening. I panicked and have started taking shredded wheat in morning and stopped full cream and on to green top milk for coffee. For lunch it's still LCHF and the same for dinner. I have got to wait for another 3 months for another test. My blood readings have kind of stabilised and they are mostly 7 and 8 which the odd one or two at between 12 and 18. I'm not sure what the significance is with a fasting and non fasting blood test ( can you explain please) and I'm not sure if I should just go back to what I was enjoying the full LCHF diet??.
I'm still pretty new to the whole diabetic thing as you know, so when the doc said stop and Dr Yung said the cholesterol is far to high " I panicked thinking a heart attack was imminent" lol haha but it did scare me ( big time)
So not sure what to do as I'm getting so mixed up now.
I hope you and the old man are keeping healthy and happy.

Hi just from a quick glance your triglycerides are good , your HDL is OK , your hbA1c is good, and your total Cholesterol and LDL are high...

As said earlier Cholesterol takes ages to settle down after starting a LCHF diet, so IMO stick with the low carbing for now and see how it goes..........

Also as said earlier the Cholesterol amount is pretty arbitrary, other countries have a higher cutoff level........

Jase :)

Hey Jase,

Yea i thought i should stick to it as I love the whole thing about it. I can do the diet not a problem for me. I know some find it very hard and i understand why.
So should I stop the wheatabix and milk again?
Can you tell me what they look at when its a fasting and non fasting. What is the significance between the two.
Thanks for the info and i think I'll just go back to the LCHF diet the way I was doing it.

Cheers P

Hi, also love LCHF and find it easyish, but then again I don't rule out anything, I will have a roast spud with sunday lunch for instance but they will be the only carbs that day and my total for the day will still be under my 40g limit........... but only once in a while tho..

If it were me I would ditch the wheatabix and milk ........

I cant help much with the fasting thing, , I just assumed it was more accurate

Hi purp,
Things do tend to get muddling at first, I don't want to muddle things further but you were doing so well with your BS numbers, now they are trailing high again if I were you I would go back to the LCHF diet that was suiting you, I warned you that your Cholesterol could rise and that it would take time to settle down again, still say don't panic at this point,
Cereals for breakfast is not good, we are at our most insulin resistant first thing in the day, resistance wanes with the day so having a roast potato in the evening is a possibility for some folks but not for others.
If on your next cholesterol test the numbers are still off then I would consider taking a small dose of statins, note I say small 10mg-20mg, as they may help bring down the numbers and then when the numbers are stable consider coming off, I and Hubs have halved our statin dose and are still maintaining good numbers,
As far as I understand it the fasting test is a tad more accurate, but I could be wrong, and if I am I'm sure someone will pipe up and say so..... :watching:

Hi purp,
So what most people don't understand is your liver produces most of the cholesterol in your body, you get some from your food, and if you have reduced the cholesterol from carbs your liver goes into panic mode and produces more than it needs too, it takes time for your liver to calm down and realise you have upped your dietary fat intake, the fasting test has no dietary fat in it so it records your liver cholesterol only.
Now if your liver is like mine and overgenerous in its production of cholesterol the statins turn off this tap or at least reduce the production, once the liver has got used to the need reduction the need for statins reduces too.
Hope this helps you understand..............

Thanks for that matter, im glad it's going well for you.
Satindoll, (yoda) yea things were going along brilliantly and it hit a little bump in the road. Just lime my car last week in the rain " straight down a pothole" and needed a new tyre as the hole was deep and what a fright I got. Lol
I was just not confident in the whole cholesterol thing, to be honest I still think Oooo it's to high I'm going to have a heart attack straight away. "silly" I know.
I see what your saying about the liver and you have said since day one about the cholesterol and to watch out, but not to panic and yip I panicked.
I feel better about the cholesterol and I'll see the doc next week, I guess I'll just ditch the Weetabix and go back onto the sausage bacon and egg and the full fat cream. ( what a shame that is Haha) love it. I was fasting about twice a week for about 16 hours trying to build it up so I'll start again.
Its Christmas time and honestly I don't mind the no bread or pasta all this lovely meat I'm going to eat yum yum.
Thanks you guys for all the info, its really made me confident in the whole process again.

Everybody have a fantastic Christmas and a wonderful New Year if I don't speak to you before. X
