Back in 2019 a routine blood test picked up higher than normal blood sugar levels. I guess this was in my HbA1c results. My GP got me in for a “routine appointment” and told me not to worry.
So went and saw him and he was worried about me developing diabetes, so he did a glucose tolerance test where they take your fasting blood level then give you a sugary drink and test your blood again two hours later.
The results came back as in the pre diabetes range so he advised me to improve my diet but it wasn’t severe enough to require medication. I didn’t need to lose any weight as I wasn’t overweight.
Anyway after that I stopped having sugar in coffee and stopped drinking cola with sugar in opting for sugar free cola instead. Also stopped having deep pan pizzas opting for thin crust instead.
Heard nothing more until I was called in for a routine blood and urine test in October 2022, there was no glucose in my urine and my bloods must have been ok as I never heard back from them.
I asked my psychiatrist about my blood sugar levels in January 2023 and he said they were within tolerance. Fast forward to September 2024 I was at my GP surgery to get a repeat script and he wanted to do a full blood count so took my bloods.
I went back six weeks later for the results and my bloods were good, I wasn’t diabetic and I no longer had pre diabetes. The only thing was my iron level were a bit low so advised taking some multivitamin with iron every day. So I bought some from the chemist.
Didn’t think to ask for my HbA1c results so when I next saw my psychiatrist I asked him, he said in September my HbA1c was 5.6% which is 38 mmol/mol. I believe this is classed as normal in UK and below the threshold for pre diabetes which is 42 mmol/mol and above.
Of course I’d prefer it to be even lower but am pleased I am no longer classed as having a high risk of developing diabetes. Looks like those small changes to my diet have made a significant difference.
