Hi I'm also interested in finding a link between diabetes, metformin, sitagliptin, arthritis. I have been T2 since 2003 but only began medication September 2012. Since December I have experienced increasing pain and stiffness in both hands. My GP sent me for an xray and blood tests but results were negative. I've never had anything like this before therefore I want to discover the cause so that I can ask for treatment. Linzi (Montana) :wave:
 
Hi linzi t2 for aprox seven years but pain and swelling in hands and wrists for two blood tests and X-ray show s little change peeked at rhumy notes and she seems to think seronegative ra so sent for ultra sound and this did show problems in fingers and thumbs so don't dispair these things take time have a look at rawarrior a lady from your neck of the woods you may find something to interest you ,still a good read if not thanks for the reply Steve .
 
There is a definite link between RA and T1, they are both autoimmune diseases and there are some genetic links. Its explained in the first link.
This link also suggests that osteo arthritis and T2 are often found together but the link is coincidental (both have weight and older age as predisposing factors)

This second link however suggests that the inflammation in RA may be linked to the development of insulin resistance (and hence T2) in people with RA. A second problem is that the use of corticosteroids that are sometimes used in RA can also lead to rising blood glucose levels and in some people cause diabetes

Hi there, this is interesting as I too have problems with my fingers,thumbs, hands, wrists and also elbows, stiffness, pain, slight swelling and my joints are always 'clicking/cracking', the left side is worse, even though I am right handed. Also left knee is painful and left ankle has restricted movement, both of my hips and outside leg area are sore to the touch, but not when walking and for the past couple of weeks a lump has appeared on the inside of my left foot just below big toe ( which someone said was probably a bunion :o ) I have had tests and its not RA (as this is other auto immune disease that attacks the body, I know RA is associated with Type 1 which I am)
My doctor has prescribed 2 weeks of anti inflammatory tablets and to see him again next week, but theres no change really. I have recently been diagnosed with Osteoporosis and asked my GP if there was a connection and he said no and he said no.

I would like to know what is going on too with my joint problems, so its back to the drawing board. I do wonder if my GP actually believes me because its one problem after another.

:roll: hi RRB, Shooter007 and all who answered my post. Thanks for that It makes me feel not quite as much on my own with this as I too wonder if my GP believes me when my pain is so real and my fingers becoming misshapen and oh so stiff. I think gp did mention she could send me for U/S but not heard yet. Sounds like there is hope for us yet eh! I'm quite new at this forum chatting and some of you have written in abbreviations which I dont yet understand but I will persevere. Linzi :wave:

Hi Linzi

Just aquick update. I went back to my GP today and told him I am still have pain after taking the inflammatory tablets for 2 weeks. He actually felt around the knee area and said it could be cartilidge, he looked at my small lump on inside of left foot and said it appears to be a bunnion, asked about what typeof shoes I wear, the ones I was wearing are the ones I wear the most,a bit bashed here and there, but very comfortable also trainers. I do a lot of walking, so always on the go. GP also looked at my left ankle and its restricted movement, he looked puzzled, but said he was going to write to my local musclular/skeletol unit which is seperate from the hospital,so they can, hopefully, do a thorough examination. Some of my bones appear 'notto be in sync' anymore, something is going on, but what??? hoping to find out soon.

:roll: Hi RRB glad to see your GP is on the ball re writing to bone specialist. Hope its nothing too serious. How long have you been diabetic and is it well controlled? I only ask because there are a few dodgy things that can go wrong with our feet and ankle bones- i only know this as I have a brother in Wales who had been badly controlled for years and the comes in his ankle began to shatter and has had to year a cast to support it for last few years. Good luck with your outcome and look forward to hearing some good news back off you when you've had your appointment x Linzi :wave:

I will of have type 1 for 24 years in August. Many up's and downs with life and diabetes, last year was particulary bad, emotionally and medically, but an anniversary is coming up which will be a trying time, but always striving to do better.

I will try and find out some information about bone problems with diabetes( I now have Osteoporosis). Thanks.

:cry: gosh RRB you've been through the mill a bit by the sound of it. The thing that's coming up for you will be difficult for you but I hope you can draw on your strength which you must have to have survived so much. I had accident last year through carelessness of a bus driver and broke my back. My consultant wants me to have scan for osteoporosis as he seems to think that could have been a factor- if he had been there he would have seen that I was thrown with such a force I slammed down on the deck and it took ambulance crew 1 1/2 hours to drug me enough to get me on spinal injuries board.

I hope the occasion that's looming up is now over and its the memories that are painful to deal with. Somehow you will have to find somewhere to store them and only look at them when you're feeling stronger. Take care and my thoughts are with you :angel:

Aaaawww bless you for your kindness. I am doing ok, I had a look at diabetes with joint and bone problems and Osteporosis and osteorithis came up( wear and tear). I only had a bone scan because I was diagnosed with Coeliac Disease in November, and this condition affects the bone structure, my results came back as -3.0 in the lumbar spine and -2.2 in the hips and Osteoporosis was diagnosed at the begining of February, so a couple ofvery annoying things, but luckily not serious. The bone scan doesn't take long and it takes about 4 weeks for the results to come back. Anything above -2.5 is Osteoporosis.

In life, people have to find inner strenght to keep going, I think everone has it, its just that some people don't know its there and may need a helping hand. My DD is always at the top and she has been a very brave girl the past 11 months, I know a certain person would be very proud of her. Oh dear I'll stop rambling now, sorry.

OMG you broke your back? I'm so sorry to hear that,what an awful thing to have happened to you, it must of been so scary. How are you now, has there been any lasting damage? I can't image what you you must have been through.
 
:) After having negative results from blood test and xray of my hands/fingers for rheumatoid arthritis I've just received an appointment to see a Rheumatologist. Does anyone know what I can expect from this visit or what they will do?
