Ringing in the ears

I have had ringing in my ears since 2011; sometimes it goes away, and sometimes it comes back. I never went to a doctor because I believe it is a problem with no cure. I ignore it—because if I focus on it, I’ll go crazy—and I’ve come to accept it as normal for me. When I was a teenager, I used to go to student dances at a club where the music was so loud it was deafening and even made my ears hurt. I remember asking the DJ to turn the volume down, but he didn't heed my request. I really don't know what causes this ringing. At times, it has been so intense that I even experienced vertigo. It sounds a lot like ultrasound. I know there is nothing I can do to stop it.
 
I wouldn’t recommend ignoring ringing in the ears. That is poor advice. The cause of ringing in my ears is acoustic neuroma. Have to have it monitored regularly. Thankfully it has remained small, and I am hoping it will never require treatment. Irony is that I have never been to noisy clubs or concerts. Never listened to loud music, or worked in a particularly noisy environment.
Would suggest getting hearing tested if symptoms of ringing in ears (tinnitus) persists. Can be a symptom of lots of things.

When I was a child, I discovered that my father couldn't hear distant sounds very well; even things I heard clearly and distinctly, he would hear as distorted, and he would ask me, "What was that noise?" I have an older sister who wears a hearing aid, and an older brother who also has tinnitus.
 
Since starting to wear hearing aids, my tinnitus has gone. I don't know how usual this is, but am grateful for it.

My hubby says similar - though it is still there sometimes but nowhere near as bad, he did ask & they said it happens for some but not sure why

My understanding of tinnitus is a gap in the hearing spectrum causes the brain to try an fill in these gaps with noise.
A modern hearing aid can reduce the brains need to fil in the gaps with sound amplification, combined with neural retraining of auditory pathways and modern hearing aids emitting soft soothing sounds which all help to mask tinnitus.

I have had tinnitus for years every now and then its bad, most of time it is manageable one thing I found helpful is bone conduction headphones instead of ear buds to listen to music to mask the ringing.
I read some where earbuds can worsen the condition.

I get intermittent tinnitus - yet another menopausal symptom, but the earlobe squeeze "hack" works for me. When it starts you squeeze the fleshy part of your earlobes as hard as possible (finger on front/thumb on back) give it a try.
 
My late father suffered terribly with tinnitus and said it started when the nurse rinsed his ears out! I suspect he had an underlying issue with his ears for years before that as he worked with heavy machinery in a factory and became deaf. We as kids would rib him that it was selective hearing. I was told I would have ear issues later on in life due to all the ear infections as a kid, so far I have some hearing loss in my left ear. I didn't realise how bad my general eyesight had changed, until I went for my eye test last week so if that's anything to go by, I may have more underlying ear issues than I initially thought
