Yesterday I watched two lectures by Robert Lustig and it suddenly hit me just how far the western diet has inveigled itself into the public consience. I was calmly listening to the dangers of HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup) and had a fleeting thought 'Yes, but that is used in North America, not here in good ol' Blighty'. Wow! I am still one of the brainwashed! He quoted that in any supermarket in the US up to 80% of foods have this poison [sic] in the ingredients list. I would guess that the figure would be a similar one here. And I have fed this toxic stuff to my family.
Aseem Malhotra gave a similar talk on Big Food and the way it manipulates science and how it gets opponents shut down right here in the UK. We are now a nation of sheep being herded first one way then another soley for the profits and share holders delight. Big Pharma are profiting from their bed mate Big Food and who is paying twice?

My first question is this. There are 57 types of sugar so when we read the food labels and see '... of which sugars' shouldn't we be asking 'which sugars exactly?'. And if we can't trust Big Pharma the why on earth should we trust Big Food?

Where does the future lay?

I kind of agree and kind of disagree..

According to this

there should be little HFCS in UK foodstuffs.. I do however agree that a lot of pre made food "manufactured" contains lots of stuff that doesn't do us any good.

I took diagnosis as a sign to start eating proper home cooked food with ingredients that haven't been "messed about with" as my dear old mum says which are still available almost anywhere.

Labeling is tricky too. Only one ingredient for me. I do allow sea salt as the the only other other in organic deli meats but I still rinse them. Lol

Otherwise avocado, shrimp, egg, turkey, chicken, lamb. Beef, olive oil , herbs, cheese , butter, celery, radish, green onion. You;get the Jist

There are sugars which are alcohols which mean nothing to us on food labels.
There's a myriad ways to disguise sugars so they are not labelled as such.
The food industry has been corrupt since the first guy fiddled the weights and measures on his scales.
Now it is very very corrupt.
We have to be completely mad to accept the drug and chemical companies into our food supplies from start to plate.
I try as hard as possible to aboid the factory and the lab on my plate.

But what about Coke and Pepsi made on licence over here? If they do that? Do they substitute HFCS for GFS?

Couldn't agree more on switching back to a more natural diet but I need to know about these poisons that may affect my family.

For some years I have avoided 'foods' that look like heroine, by that I mean things like MSG and artificial sweeteners (even the new gen sweeteners). Big Food lies, they lie about a lot of things so why on earth beleive the hype about sweeteners? Because some people cannot do without their sweet fix, that is why.

The only weapon I have against all this is the power of my purse. @JTL is right, if it is made at a plant then it is not going on my plate. Now I jus' gotta convince the family.

The same Professor Robert Lustig took three years off from his day job to take a law degree. He needed it since he wasn't able to talk to the food industry who keep altering the names of items and changing formulas. The one I liked was when the food industry didn't want to say sugar so they called it dried cane juice.

The power of the purse is what will win this war. I was briefly involved in a debate on another site where people were talking about legislation from Government etc. I suggested that they just stopped buying the rubbish and they all went quiet.

hope you check the deli meats for nitrites
Of course I do. It’s only sea salt and I rinse it. My diet is severely limited with diabetes and almost more so with my stomach. Reducing stress of foods helps emennsly. I gotta do what I gotta do. Stress is the silent killer. I have to eat and some convenience foods help. Nobody and no food is perfect. I could dissect the negatives and positives of EVERY food
