I use a accu-chek expert meeter which calculates my bolus' for me as after a few mishaps at work from hypos, It calculates my bolus' for me. Ive had this meter for a month now and get on well with it, Alot better than I did with my old contour meter.

Anyway for some reason roche have sent me the accu chek mobile meter. It doesnt have a reason why it just has a with compliments slip. I dont remember ordering it but just registering my expert meter with them.

What should I do with it?

They are?
I thought they can be gotten on prescription, I might just sell it on the bay then as I am not going to use it
I get the normal ones on prescription and my diabetes team has told me to not take NO for an answer when putting in repeats for test strips.

It has been the case for sometime that we dont pay the real cost of meters - if they are not given away then they sold well below their market value. The companies make their money out selling the consumables in the main to the NS. Cyncially it is of course easy to dismiss this as marketing for a profit - which of course it is. However it had led to the constant development and improvement of meters from being machines that simply measure a moment in time to become a tool to aid manage lifestyle. I doubt we would have seen the new fast, almost pain free, testing if it hadnt been for the profit to made in selling the test strips.

These companies also treat their meter products in rather the same way that magazine pubishers virtually give away subscriptios, it enables them to say "there are xxxx thousand of these already in use.

Its like the printer manufacturers, They literally give away the printers while charge you loads of ink cartridges.

While it is a very good marketing technique for the medical companies. I just don't need or want more meters cluttering up the place. until I find the meter I like.

The companies make their money on test strips and that company have the contract with the Nhs. There's actually not a huge bit more than normal stripes but soon adds up.

How about offering it to a member here who doesn't have a meter?

Hmmmmm, but the strips cost 50p a test. The member would probably be better off buying themselves an SD Codefree than wasting money on expensive strips...

Keep hold of it, always better to have a spare meter in case your Expert meter malfunctions.

Your Expert meter costs £80, hence why you can only get them via your DSN/Consultant...

Roche has sent you the mobile meter for a backup meter, if you'll using insulin you should always keep a spare meter..

Three things you can do,

If you haven't opened yet, you could contact Roche and ask if you can return it and replace the meter with a Nano, as this take the same test strips as the Expert.

If you've opened it, ask your doctor to add the the mobile test strips to your prescription, just in case you need them

Finally, you can always speak to your DNS and ask for it to be swapped for a nano

Hi

Every now and again companies make mistakes in what they despatch to people who order stuff from them. I think you have received the Mobile meter in error but not to worry too much because if you send it back to Accu chek it will most likely be thrown away. Accu chek will have rectified their mistake by now anyway and despatched another Mobile meter to the correct person, so keep the Mobile and just have it handy in case you need a backup bg meter................

Accu check or whoever it is are sending our complimentary upgrade meters at the moment. Like you say probably to promote the use of the strips. But a free meterr is OK I had to pay for mine at diagnosis so I would put it away as a spare as it would cost me another £20 for another if mine goes wrong.
