Hi! I am 23 and just been diagnosed T1. Previously I was believed to be T2 was on Metformin and Gliclazide. New years eve I had a hot sausage roll from a garage while at work and started to feel a little sick. Though it was just dodgy food sipped at water all night but couldn't keep anything down new years day after pulling every muscle in my chest and a call to 111 which resulted in them telling me to have a couple of paracetamols and sleep it off.

I decided to go to A&E. 5 minutes in A&E rushed to Resuscitation iv put in both arms. 3 litres of saline in first hour I felt a ton better. Spent the next 4 days in ICU having bloods done every hour turns out I had ketoacidosis. The doctor seemed very very angry at 111s advice. The nurse seemed to think it could have been fatal not sure as to accuracy of this as the nurse in question didnt seem to confident in anything that was a little bit disconcerting when finding out I was T1 and having millions of questions.

Either way home now back to work which is making controlling my blood sugar a little difficult due to walking 8 hours a day. Not having to much of an issue with the injections 4 times a day and getting steady 6s before meals 8s after. The one thing I am struggling with is my carb intake. Anyway hi This forum has been wonderful for answering all those little questions I dont want to bug the diabetic nurse about I look forward to hopefully contributing to the forum in the future once I have settled into a routine and have gained some experience to share.

A t1 diagnosis is daunting but you will get there

What an awful ordeal, pleased your back home and doing well, those bg readings look fine so try not to worry too much, but with regards to your carb intake, what is it your struggling with?

I am a carb eating monster. Mountains of Pasta, Rice and potatoe. Its not to bad on work days as can eat a decent amount and not worry to much as walking it off but on days of I struggle to reduce them find suitable replacements that fill me up. Tried cauliflower rice and courgette pasta for a month or so last October but just doesnt satisfy me in the same way. Thinking about jogging or something on my days off just so I can eat a few more carbs on my days off but never going to be able to burn the amount I do at work.

Jogging is good and if you fancy doing that then go ahead, but try making some small adjustments to your carb intake on your days off as being less active does adversely effect bg levels.

I know when I'm extremely active I can have a good carb feast beforehand and take very small amounts of insulin in comparison, when I'm not so active (as in being laid up due to illness) then I have to cut them back a little.
