Rude NHS diabetes nurse - new diagnosed with Steroid Induced Diabetes

Hi I hope you are improving. Rude nurses are not helpful neither are rude Consultants.

I have a rare disease caused by taking Statins, ( Myositis). For this I was given very high doses of Prednisone for over 6 years (I am finally off them). I was Type 2 diabetic with Forxiga and Metformin. Almost immediately I was put on Insulin.

I was given IVIG for the Myositis and it took up a lot of my time 3 long days a month in day hospital. I tried to ask the Consultant to reduce the IVIG dosage. She cornered me in the hospital corridor and told me if I could not accept her treatment I would no longer be her patient. So I responded fine I am no longer your patient.

I asked her how many other patients she had with my condition and she responded none ( so no real knowledge of the disease)

I drove home shaking with anger and phoned my wife to tell her what happened.

Changing Consultants was the best thing I did, I have had some really nice, empathetic Consultants who researched my disease spoke to other experts in the field and put me on another drug (CellCept) that seems effective. I then reduced my Prednisone and finally finished it last month.

I have just been to see my GP who wants me to start taking Forxiga again and reduce the insulin.

I don’t see why patients should not be allowed to contribute to their treatment and not be bullied into taking treatments they are not happy with by Nurses, Doctors and Consultants.

Regards Nick

IMO patient input is essential - nobody knows us like we do. We are individuals, not a generic series of symptoms from an out-of-date textbook. Information should be treated as a learning opportunity for patient and medic together, even if it takes a little more time.
