What do people usually eat before a run.
I'm running around 25 minutes (3-4km) per day on my lunch break.
What is the best mmol to be at beforehand and what snack would other people usually have beforehand?
Thanks

Hi benack, what type are you? As a type 1, I test beforehand and if I am above 5 I don't eat anything. If I am below or know that I'm going to be running for longer than around 30 minutes, I take a couple of glucose tablets. There are so many variations though and it all depends on your type/your medication/your metabolism/your readings and on and on and on!

Type 1, I will start from your recommendation tomorrow and see how glucose tablets do, if I'm too high or low after I can alter it, I usually have a cereal bar about half hour beforehand but want to avoid a heavy stomach as much as I can.

This is a very personal thing depending on
- how fit you are at running
- how much insulin you have on board
- how long you run for
- how you treat your diabetes (which type of insulin, do you have a pump, ...)

For example, I have type 1 treated with Novorapid insulin via a pump.
I usually run as part of my gym. I run (slowly) for about 20 to 30 minutes and get very out of breath. I don't eat anything before. I reduce my basal by 30% 60 to 90 minutes before I start the run for 2.5 hours.
I try not to run with insulin on board so I try not to eat for 3 hour before the gym.
Whilst I will take a BG reading just before I start, I will only react if my BG is higher than 7 (take it easier on the treadmill) or lower than 5 (chew a glucotab).

Hi @benack1992 I also run and aim to start a run with BG levels above 6, I tend to run in the morning so eat a slice of toast before I head out, and always run with some food on board (10g of carb or less) and take a 1/2 bolus for it, I take the libre on the run along with glucose so if I need to I can check during the run without stopping, I also take my pump off for a 20 min run or reduce basal rate to 60% for the run if longer. For short runs of less than 40 mins I tend to stay stable, have yet to conquer anything longer than that but might try a 10km this weekend ;)

You need experiment to see what works for you. Personally, I'd want to be around 6 before a run. My routine is 2 Dextro before I run, then 2 every 15 mins and testing every 30 mins. If you're going for 25 mins, you should aim to be the same before the run and after, adjusting glucose intake as you see fit. Note that 1 Dextro tablets will raise your BGs by 1mmol/l
