Why are we told to avoid this? or limit it at least? I cant find anything on the internet about it or any medical reports. I'm not over weight or suffer from hypertension so shouldn't I be able to enjoy this...cause god! do I miss it on me foodz :p
 
Its only people who suffer from high blood pressure kidney problems or congestive heart failure who need to watch their salt..a moderate amount when cooking is fine...the trouble is that its added to so much processed food and ready meals ect. So if you don't cook meals at home properly we can ingest far more than is good for us. Its in everything bread crisps biscuits pizza dough. The list is endless. Mind you us diabetics don't eat those kind of foods or they shouldn't. So you can enjoy your salt in moderation if your diet is good
 
I'm not aware that we should avoid salt completely, the RDA for salt consumption is 6g a day. Although it's true that people with blood pressure problems should limit their salt intake, it can also contribute to high bp in the first place, as allibee says it's already in a lot of processed foods such as bread, hams, sausages, bacon, cheese and tinned products such as baked beans to name a few.
 
Earlier salt was believed to cause all kinds of problems. Recent studies report that too little salt is as bad as too much. A level of around 12 grams per day seems to all right if I remember correctly, provided you don't suffer from high BP.

Not entirely sure we'd all agree with that statement.
I don't add salt to food though.
 
Sorry I should have said most of us are unable to eat those kind of foods...I know you and others follow a more GI diet. And I also know you have lost a lot of weight and have good control ..you are maybe able to eat some of these
 
Hi. It fits into the same category as the advice on fats i.e. generally based on bad science. Unless you have some condition with kidneys, blood pressure etc then ignore the salt advice and enjoy it. 60 years ago in my childhood we had stacks of salt in everything and I'm still alive with good blood pressure and kidneys.

That's interesting, being roughly the same age as your good self, our mother used to say to much salt is bad for you. oddly enough both my sister and I have high blood pressure.
I still think to much salt is bad for you. but you have now got me thinking.:)
 
Yeah that's another thing I was wondering about, They say stay away from fats but on here I see its encouraged in the Newcastle diet and lots of people here enjoy streaky bacon and sausages. That's good cause It means I can still have my Saturday fry-up :D

The Newcastle diet is very restricted calorie, no fat.
 
Oh yes bacon sausages mushrooms and fried eggs..all low carb and won't spike your blood glucose at all...great isn't it :)

Some reputable medical opinion does still warn about sodium nitrate in processed meat increasing the risk of heart disease though (the mayo clinic usually acknowledges where thinking is changing, but is still clear on this one).
My cardio surgeon -- who is at the main heart hospital in the country and specializes in this sort of thing -- is talking about increasing the salt in my diet to combat hypotension, so I think the link of salt to blood pressure is still accepted by those in the cardio field.

well im a male type 1 diabetes i cant add salt to meals now, the salt gives me servier leg cramps
