Saw my practise nurse yesterday about my asthma pumps asked her about salty taste in my mouth all the time.I was asked if I drunk plenty of water.I was not, only two small bottles of mineral water a day. I was told that was the problem. But was told by hospital all teas and coffee count towards couple of litres a day.I have increased water but I am still getting it. Could it be my low carb diet.My weight is stable and she said that I will not lose weight because I cannot exercises. But I know of one member on here who cannot exercise but has lost weight.I have had a thyroid test but that came back normal. I am having below 900 calories everyday and trying my best to keep carbs below 80 just feel quite depressed at what she has said. X

Hey @Motherhen2014, you need to give yourself a pat on the back for the good work that you are doing - the nurse's opinion is just that - so take the morsel of truth from it that you need to start drinking more water, and although coffee and tea are liquid, that is some debate as to whether that should really count as your liquid intake.....if you find water hard to drink straight, try some lemon or lime in it - perhaps that will help with that salty taste. Could it also be from your asthma pumps combined with less water intake? Sorry I can't be of much help, but please, don't beat yourself up because of one comment - you are doing really well!

Poor grammar, bullying and drunks.
Saying that you cannot lose weight because you cannot excercise just shows what that nurse knows about the metabolism. She was also just guessing about the salty taste in your mouth being due to a lack of fluids.
This is just my opinion but I beleive weight loss is 90% diet and 10% excercise. I cut my carbs and lost weight without a moment of excercise, do not misunderstand, excercise will speed up the benefits of bg management and overall good health but one should not feel guilty about being unable to partake.

I suggest that you conentrate on lowering your carb intake to a level that you and your glucometer are comfortable with. The fewer carbs you have the lower the insulin response will (eventually) become and as we know, insulin drives fat storage. Well done on stabilising your weight, this is the first step. Keep up the great work and do not stress too much about calories, they are secondary to bg levels at this stage.

As I understand the guidance, one should plenty of fluids, not "just water". Even the water contained in food counts. If it was only water I would be dead, as I drink a glass of a day. IMO bottled water is a scam, it helps the profits of companies such as Nestle but that's all.

What a silly nurse! For the first ten months of my diagnosis (May’17- beginning of this month) I did no formal exercise due to my arthritis in my feet causing problems. I had an operation in Dec on my foot so was walking even less for the first 3 months of this year. During that ten months I have lost nearly 5 1/2 stone by low carbing, between 40 - 60g carbs per day. I didn’t count calories at all. It’s only recently when I hit a plateau that I’ve been using some lower calorie alternatives. Maybe you could try lowering your carbs and forget about calories for a bit and see what happens.
I’m not sure about the salty taste in your mouth but I have asthma too and have been told to rinse my mouth after using my inhalers especially the steroid one. I’m probably stating the obvious but just in case.
I’m not keen on plain water so drink no added sugar squashes, if your ok with sweeteners that might help you drink more.

P.S.

The best person to ask about possible side effects of drugs, including asthma pumps, with regard to taste disturbance is you freindly neighbourhood pharmicist but choose a time when the pharmacy is quiet as they are often just too busy to answer queries whilst filling prescriptions. Good luck.

Just my 2p.. I find that when I get the taste of salt in my mouth its because I'm a bit low on it so I dd some to whatever I happen to be drinking.. coffee/tea whatever. Seems to go away after that. It might a deficiency especially when eating home cooked low carb.
