I have a quick question. My FBG is usually 7.0 - 8.0. I often (few times a week) have oats for breakfast, cook them with water and splenda and pour a little milk over at the end,(few spoonfuls). I actually like it like this and have always made my porridge with water not milk. today FBG was 8.1, had the porridgy breakfast and now m bg is 12.6. It doesnt normally give me such a spike in my bg and is one of the breakfasts that i can usually rely on to keep bg's stable over the morning.

Why would I suddenly change my reaction to something i regularly eat.

I havent had anything else, except now am halfway through a bottle of water and am going to go for a walk, will see what it is when i get back.

Just wondering if anyonee else had odd bg reactions to foods they normally eat with no problem.

Hi

Did you immediately re-test? It may have been a rouge test strip. What spike does it normally give you?

i normally dont get a spike from it, but i felt headachy and 'off' so i tested and it was high. A walk and a bottle of water later it is back down to 8.2.

I did retest about 15 minutes later and it was slightly higher 12.9, so not a rogue strip.

its weird that a year ago when diagnosed i was running on BG's of 16.0 to 20.0 and felt fine, but now if it starts getting to 11 or 12 I feel 'funny'.

Hi Marigold :)

What is your usual test result after this meal and when do you test? - I have to say for me eating porridge on a fasting test of 7 -8 would most certainly put me in 13 -14 range 2 hours after and probably even higher after 3 hours - you could alter the G.I by adding some nuts or cream.

As to a meal sometimes throwing out a random odd result - yes that can happen - as our hormones etc are not a fixed point - no meal will give exactly the same result every time. If as you say you have this meal a few times a week try some intensive testing of it - e.g.) fasting 2hrs then 3 hrs after on 3 occasions to get more of an idea what is happening when you eat this maybe your portion size needs tweaking?

Wish I could take porridge more often as I love it :( but only have it if my fasting is below 5.5 and I am planning a very busy morning
