My surgery is saving money.Firstly they have cut down seeing a Diabetic nurse from six months to a year now instead of the full blood test they used to do it is just HBA1C. The standards are slipping but the GPs still get in the area of a £100,000 for a four and a half days week and the locums get £500 for a days work.

Hi. Yes, they are tightening up which I guess is not a surprise as diabetes costs the NHS a fortune. You can always ask for a 3 or 6 month review if your blood sugar is mis-behaving or you have other diabetes problems? 1 year is standard for those who are reasonably well-balanced. I wouldn't worry about the blood test changing. It used a to be a fasting test which was a nuisance and the fasting blood glucose reading was of little use. The important test is the HBA1C which as you say is still being done. The only value in the fasting test was to get more accurate cholesterol results.

Very few GP's get that sort of salary. You will also find that a full blood panel is done otherwise the surgery will not receive the extra funding for having someone with diabetes on their list.
Annual reviews are the norm unless the patient is a cause for concern as in non compliant or newly diagnosed.

I had my first 3 month test after T2 diagnosis last week, and as my HbA1c had gone down from 49 to 44 my GP said I wouldn't be tested again for 12 months. I was a bit surprised by that as from reading this forum others seem to be tested more often, but now I guess it is because I had lowered my HbA1c - my GP said she was happy when she saw my results, and could tell I had lost weight.

I only normally get an annual check up, I had one a few weeks ago and it was done the same as always so maybe it is different surgery to surgery
